Making music about being young and embracing a worst-case-scenario type of
storytelling, Muscles new single 'Ice Cream' speaks of teenage vulnerability on
the streets: "There are people who are pushing me on the train, screaming at the
top of their lungs, 'you're gonna get what's coming and I don't know how to
react or if I should fight back". Muscles is sharp and observant, and manages to
turn the issue of knife crime into sincere verse, intelligently wrapped up in a
tantalizing pop melody.
Track 2, 'Dolphin' is Muscles' instrumental vision; a voice-less Muscles
experiments with sighs and breathy snippets of vocals in a cut and paste style
of production. The Remix of Ice Cream by Melbourne's Sly Hats opens with tinny
synths sounding like the echoes of an ice cream van veering downhilL Very apt!
This memorable chorus is cheerily done and Muscles is not one to take himself
too seriously - his love of 90's dance floor classics and Super Nintendo hasn't
gone unnoticed. 'Spirits' shows off bass-heavy two-step beat a typical Muscles
trait.
The son of a crocodile farmer, 22 year old Muscles was born in the small
Australian outback town of White Cliffs. Whilst other kids were banging their
heads to Sabbath and Deep Purple, Muscles swathed himself in 90s pop singles,
bad trance compilations and Super Mario. His overenthusiastic dance pop works so
well, it sounds like everything great about good old fashioned. non-pretentious
dance music cleverly disguising the sinister undertone of his lyrical content.
