│ Horror is hot these days, with a slew of genre films hitting screens │
│ this fall. Among the crop of this resurgence in guts and grue is Cabin │
│ Fever, the overhyped return to the "glory days" of '70s grindhouse │
│ cinema. Allegedly attempting to evoke the spirit of dark tales like Evil │
│ Dead and The Last House On The Left, Cabin Fever suffers from a wildly │
│ uneven tone, inexperienced direction and unsympathetic characters. This │
│ film doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a story of backwoods │
│ hillbilly hell? A cheeseball comedy complete with mullet-headed │
│ kiddie-kung-fu? Or is it a satire of the seemingly transparent idea of │
│ "friendship"? It's not anyone of these, it's all of them! Mix in a │
│ little gore, and you have a roller coaster ride that lurches, screeches │
│ and breaks down as it jumps the tracks, plummeting back to earth where │
│ it proceeds to explode in a massive fireball (as denizens of an unnamed │
│ town gather 'round, strum up their banjos and enjoy tall glasses of │
│ virus-infected lemo-nade). Scoring this crimson-coloured mess is │
│ newcomer Nathan Barr, who treats the proceedings completely serious, as │
│ if he's writing an elegy for the film's own funeral. Veteran Angelo │
│ Badalamenti contributes a few additional pieces, completely at odds with │
│ Barr's music. Badalamenti drools slow jazz where Barr's score creaks │
│ away, all low-register strings and flittery percussion. │
│ │
│ Fans of Wendy Carlo's landmark arrangement of "Dies Irae" for The │
│ Shining main titles will find that Barr's own "Main Title" for Cabin │
│ Fever evokes the same spirit. In fact, there's not only just spirit │
│ here, but the flesh, blood and bones of Carlos' cue. Barr makes it his │
│ own though, spinning several twisting and effective variations on the │
│ theme in "What To Do", "Jeff Makes It" and "Coming To A Town Near You". │
│ Besides a battery of strings instruments (presumably performed by the │
│ composer), Nathan Barr dials in texture with harps, percussion, │
│ processed effects and voices (again, a la Wendy Carlos' The Shining, no │
│ more obvious than in "Pancakes / Runnin' From Rednecks", complete with │
│ "Native" chanting). Most of the time Barr's score alternates between │
│ tight string grooves ("Karen Falls Apart") and dreary dissonance ("Marcy │
│ & Paul Screw"). There are no high-powered orchestral outbursts, as this │
│ is an extremely economic effort. While it's certainly not the most │
│ colorful or diverse score I've heard recently, it makes the transition │
│ to stand-alone listening experience, despite budgetary constraints and │
│ limited inspiration from the film. │
│ │
│ Badalamenti's bits are more new-agey, particularly "Red Love" (for │
│ cinema's first sloshy man-on-female masturbation scene), which sounds │
│ like a Tangerine Dream outtake from Legend. If for one second you could │
│ convince yourself that Cabin Fever is not supposed to be a horror │
│ picture, you might appreciate Badalamenti's "Deputy Winston", a smooth │
│ jazz piece with a cool vibe bass and organ lines. │
│ │
│ There are two major fumbles with this album: songs and dialogue, neither │
│ of which is likely to woo hardcore film music enthusiasts and their │
│ spending money. Wisely sequenced at the beginning of the album (to get │
│ it all out of the way, right away) are five forgettable tunes, none of │
│ which are particularly noteworthy except that director Eli Roth likes │
│ them, therefore they're in his film. Dialogue, well it's a pain in the │
│ ass and has ruined several fine albums. Since Cabin Fever is no classic │
│ to begin with, now you can relive (or suffer?) several script │
│ "highlights" dispensed by such cinematic luminaries as the chunky idiot │
│ from Detroit Rock City and the daughter of a Charlie's Angel. The idea │
│ here must be to please fans of the picture, again, wisely they are cut │
│ as individual tracks so you can sequence them out. The score's sound │
│ quality is very good, particularly in the mastering, which is generous │
│ and doesn't require you to crank your stereo during playback. The album │
│ includes a note from the director and composer. │
│ │
│ While clearly aimed at 30-year-old Fangoria subscribers who still live │
│ in their parent's basement in New Jersey (okay, just kidding), regular, │
│ well-adjusted film music afficionados might find Nathan Barr's │
│ contributions to be this discs strong points (if it were presented │
│ alone, this reviews rating would be higher). It's a solid genre effort │
│ that, unlike the film, should find itself enjoying cult status along │
│ with similar low-tech, low-budget creepers like Joseph LoDuca's Evil │
│ Dead, Charles Bernstein's A Nightmare On Elm Street and Harry │
│ Manfredini's Friday The 13th. │
│ │
│ Enjoy another GREAT release from SRN!!! │
