earth dragon is the new offering by ottawa's eric vani. his third
solo record as rise ashen, it is a dubbed-out excursion into
broken grooves from the four corners of the world. the textures
and the melodies are bred from dub reggae, indian fusion,
scandinavian folk, and american r&b, house and jazz. the
production values are underground broken-beat and nu-jazz; and the
rhythmic explorations are as rooted in the west-london sound as
they are in brazilian jazz. earth dragon features vocals by
toronto diva nick-e pratt, mc'ing by dane-jah-rus, japanese spoken
word by aki takahashi, saxophones by peter gould and tim gerber,
congas by tony almante and cuica by trevor walker as well as
vocals, tabla, bass, surdu, berimbau, and dozens of other
instruments by rise ashen. the album was recorded over the course
of 2002 in ottawa and was mixed by long-time collaborator blissom
from paris. lush, textured and slick, the record is an emotional
journey through the rhythm and ambiences of the past and future of
world-jazz. the name "earth dragon" comes from an ancient kung-fu
form that is known for its rooted power. for rise ashen, the earth
dragon is a symbol of our world. a quiet, powerful dragon who has
let humanity take all it wants from her. we have gone too far
though, and we are angering the dragon. the first track "change
our ways" is a rousing call to action and spiritual and global
awakening. earth dragon's sensual ambiences took shape at the
crossroads of technology and tradition. it is a dance record that
was built to last, a beautiful blend of percussive and loungy jazz
that sounds as great in the club as it does in the car, or the
living room. enjoy!
