Hipp-E: New Mexico in 1972

FAMILY
Hipp-E: My family are all supportive of my career which is
really a blessing. I think my mom wishes I'd play more
classics but the rest of my family love what I play.
Halo: My family are excited and happy for me, that I am
pursuing my career of choice. They're really proud of me.
MUSICAL ROOTS
Hipp-E: I listened to all sorts of things when I was
younger; r 'n' b, soul, funk and, of course, a little bit of
rock n roll. It was eighties electronic bands like Kraftwerk
that got me into the music I do now.
Halo: Eighties! I listened to all the music of the era.
After that it was the Chicago music that surrounded me
during my days at [Chicago record label/distribution centre]
Hip House that really got me to where I am now.
FIRST PROJECTS
Hipp-E: 'Hear Dis' Sound' on Siesta was the first record I
ever put out. They just re- released it and it is doing well
so that makes me feel like it is a track that has stood the
test of time. I am happy with it.
Halo: My first project was a label that came out of Hip
House, their only release as a matter of fact. It was called
`Earth, Wind, Fire, Water'. It was my first track so it's
memorable for me but with all that I have learned I think
it's under produced.
LABELS & PRODUCTION
Hipp-E: I have done work for several labels in the past but
now I keep my releases to Nightshift, Tango and Soma.
Nightshift is my own label. I just try to put out quality
dance music and I'm always trying to reach new heights with
what I do. I love producing; to be honest it makes feel warm
and tingly all over!
Halo: I've worked on labels like Siesta, Soma, NRK, Moody,
Yoshitoshià damn, so many more. Tangoà too many more! I also
have my own label Bluem and IÆve produced a lot of different
music. Being able to make music that I love and that people
appreciate is a constant highlight for this line of work. I
like to produce but really I was born to DJ.
DJING
Hipp-E: I learnt to DJ by watching my friend in Denver. I
remember thinking any monkey could do that! I've really
learnt by watching others and by being forced into learning
quickly as I started in clubs, with an audience! Sink or
swim style! There's so many great places I love to play, I
feel lucky to have seen such amazing venues all over the
world. My style of DJing, I'd say, is fun, funky, and deep.
I consider myself to be a DJ foremost. IÆm enjoying the
development of my producer side but getting out there and
sharing it all with the dance flooràwell that is it for me.
Halo: In eighth grade I had friends that had turntables and
I was at their place every day after school. I started going
to clubs to see the DJs and take in what they were doing.
ThatÆs where it all really started. I practiced on my
friends relentlessly and my favourite place to play is still
at home! My style of DJing is deep and it's definitely the
most important part of what I do.
FABRICs
Hipp-E At the Winter Music Conference in Miami a few heads
from fabric liked what they heard and we were invited to
play. It was a good fit all around, the staff are amazing to
work with and the crowd's simply unbelievable. I am always
amazed at how they change it and keep it exciting to be a
part of. Always top notch. It's something I look forward to
in my schedule. I never cease to be inspired and pushed by
what I hear there. From the crowd to the crew that puts it
on it means the best of what I'm in this business for; to me
Fabric means reward. The crowd is stylish, up on tunes and a
challenge to please. They make me work and that is what I
love about them. They like the more obscure house tracks,
the fresh different stuff. It makes it fun for me!'
Halo: Yeah, the fabric crew heard us when they were over at
the Winter Music Conference. They were pleased with what
they heard and it went from there. Now we have a residency
that I love. I think fabric is definitely one of the best
clubs in the world. The fabric night that we play at is just
truly inspiring to me. It means we get to hear good music
all night and the crowd are really receptive to new music.ö
THE FUTURE
Hipp-E: At long last finishing the album for H-Foundation
and then a solo Hipp-E album.
Halo: There's going to be a solo Halo album in 2003 on
Bluem.
