Daniel W. Best, long-term cohort of Jazzanova and Sonar Kollektiv is
always on the look out for smack and the freshest sounds in Soul, Dub
and Reggae for his own imprint Best Seven. He already displayed his
know-how by releasing the works of many talented artists such as Eva
Be, Chaka Domu, Frost & Wagner, Joe Dukie or The Black Seeds and with
his two Best Seven Selections compilations (SBCD0005 and SBCD0006)
featuring the creme de la creme of contemporary Dub and Reggae. The
moody electro-dub joint Freedom by Catrat was probably one of the
stand-out tunes of Best seven selections 2 (SBCD0006) and of the Best
seven selections 2 sampler 12" (SB7019). This beautiful number driven
by an easy-listening groove and the deep voice of Yah Meek is easily
one of the most soulful and relaxing moments of dub to date on Best
Seven. Daniel W. Best also felt that Freedom had the potential to
move the crowds on the dancefloor and got Jay Haze and Kabuki on the
case, in order to give a little musical lifting to that wonderful
tune.
Berlin-resident Jay Haze hardly needs introduction. He is the man
behind many successful projects such as Bearback, The Architect,
Fuckpony and has released records and remixes on most of the hottest
dance music labels of the decade: Playhouse, Kitty-Yo, Cocoon, Get
Physical Music, Soma, Crack and Speed, Musik Krause amongst others.
He enjoyed some crossover success in 2007 with the release of the
massively acclaimed Children of Love album on Get Physical Music
under the name Fuckpony, as well as the mighty Switch The Lights
E.P., an acid-drenched biblical journey into sin, which was picked up
by Sven Vath's label Cocoon for a major re-release. Moreover Jay Haze
is responsible for running several labels himself including Tuning
Spork and Contexterrior, with releases from Robag Wruhme, Samim &
Michal, who are now household in the world of house and techno.
With his amazing remix Jay Haze demonstrates his outstanding
production skills and shows his long-standing love for
forward-thinking dub music. Over a minimal yet very driving dub
groove HAZE uses spaced-out electronic sound textures to take your
mind to a relaxing mental space. His remix comes in two different
versions, a vocal remix giving more depth to the voice of Yah Meek
and a DJ-friendly dub version tailored to heat up electro and dub
dancefloors the world over!
The second remix comes courtesy of Berlin's most wanted Drum n' Bass
DJ and producer Jan Hennig a.k.a Kabuki, who released the dub soul
anthem After The Fire with Cleveland Watkiss (SB7013) on Best Seven
in 2003 and who also had tracks on Crippled Dick Hot Wax! and Compost
Records and on V Recordings sublabel Liquid V to name but a few.
Kabuki's treatment is a four to the floor house affair blended with
warm keyboard melodies and tight drum parts. It gives Catrat's
Freedom a surprising and refreshing dancefloor flavour and it will
surely find its place in the box and charts of many DJs and in the
playlist of many house lovers.
