The Altiplano - "Whright plains in spanish - is the largest frihabited high
plateua on earth outside tibet, located in the widest area of the andes. between
14░ and 27░ south latitude. It extends over four countries: Agentina, Bolivia,
Perou and Chile.
Altiplano is a suspension, tuning in to sound traces, almost sublimal tones
effervescing, vegetal music and geographical notes echo the murmurs and
precipitous summits of our memories. There is some restraint in these "high
planing" vaulting exercises, some lunacy as well, under the silence lies the
land of the andes peasants and its negated, migrant black beat.
The journey strarts with two the finest migratory birds: Magic Malik, lunar and
cerebral, travelling with his afro-carabbean ancestrors, Minino Garay, fiery and
bursting with swarthy rhytms and the deelpy buried tensions of a country whose
people are said to have come from boats. They pay homage to jaime Tores the
registrer, the great man who has conveyed his whole people through the modest
notes of his charango for over sixty years, raising small plots of land to the
scale of universal poetry.
Like funambulists, they add transgressive interlacing to dances as old as the
earth-chacareras, milongas and other zambas.as collected in 1934 by Alfred
MΘtraux, ridding on a mule alongside a giant bard Atahualpa Yupanqui.
