After impressing everyone who heard their splendid "Other Animals"
compilation earlier this year, SydneyÆs Couchblip return to the
fold with DenmarkÆs Lars PellarinÆs debut album. Its well worth
remembering the name, as thereÆs ample evidence here of a supreme
talent striding confidently. "So far" teases us from the outset,
eliciting twinkling melodies and trilling fills, against the
fattest, bugging bass. "soas mah" shares this preoccupation, wholly
sanctified chords tugging against our favourite kind of low end.
ThereÆs evidence of influences, maybe Arovane and Autechre to stick
with the AÆs, but on a track like "Polite" thereÆs a kind of robust
tenderness which is completely engaging. ThereÆs a real special ear
at work, finding the kinds of melodies which cajole their way into
the waking subconscious, the listener open, softened up by
accomplished rhythm manipulations throughout. Just check the beat
on "Belarus" - deadly. "Auxi" makes plain the ╞ connection, but
this is so much more than a pedestrian retread of familiar
favouritesû especially when you listen to the glorious melancholic
glow of the melody line on "Trigs". Instead, Lars leaves us in no
doubt, that his inspirations are just that, leaving him free to
pursue new sounds, awesome harmonies and sonorous elements of
     rhythm. Beautiful album, strongly recommended.
