Lal Waterson is hardly the best known of folk singers, but her
work has proved some of the most influential in the scene.
Starting very young she formed a band in the early 1960s with
her sister Norma and brother Mike and under the name the
Watersons proceeded to put her hand to some of the most
influential early folk records of the era. It's said that
these early recordings set a precedent for acts such as
Steelye Span and Fairport Convention, but their best was yet
to come. The band disbanded in the late 60s thanks to
excessive touring, but when they reformed in 1972 they managed
to put together a record that would re-define the scene.
Entitled 'Bright Phoebus' it featured a whole host of now
legendary names; Richard Thompson, Maddy Prior, Anne Brigs,
Martin Carthy and more and still today is revered by folk
fanatics across the world. This compilation is a celebration
of Lal Waterson's many songs (she continued to write up until
her death in 1998) and fittingly takes cult names from the new
wave of British folk music, as well as dropping in a couple of
     classics.

Keeps alive the thoughtful, rebellious, radical Englishness
found in the best folk music... Nineteen different voices from
different decades, countries, traditions and concerns, but the
solitary, alienated quality of Waterson's bleak, fearless
songs ensures a mesmerising consistency. Buy this as your folk
album of the year, not least because the music seems so
contemporary and timeless that it could easily get away with
not being called folk. (The Observer).
