▓████▓▌ bad thing. The music division of the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ military-industrial complex tramples creativity ▓▌
▓████▓▌ underfoot as it vacuums up the yens, deutsche marks ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and dollars. Accountants rule these days. The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ individualism and creativity is being bled out of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ much of the realm of music. Music out on the edge ▓▌
▓████▓▌ is rapidly disappearing, along with the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ middle-to-large-size entrepreneur-led labels, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ companies where the owners were also closely ▓▌
▓████▓▌ involved in the A&R side of things, mavericks with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a vision of putting out music because they actually ▓▌
▓████▓▌ like it. In fact, there are people who used to run ▓▌
▓████▓▌ this kind of label, having sold out to the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ multinationals and taken the money, who are now ▓▌
▓████▓▌ talking about setting up operations where ▓▌
▓████▓▌ individualism and character rule. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ I doubt whether the Lyrichord label in New York is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ owned by a megacorp. The quality of the folky and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ethno music they put out is too high for that. Like ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a new release by Chocolate -- not the great Cuban ▓▌
▓████▓▌ trumpet player, Chocolate Almedtoros, but ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Chocolate, Peru's Master Percussionist! He plays, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ among other percussion, the cajon, which is a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ wooden box drum. Chocolate pounds out deep African ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ritual drumming. The informative sleeve notes talk ▓▌
▓████▓▌ about the percussionist as shaman, calling and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ invoking the spirits, "mediator between heaven and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ earth since the spirits are expressed through his ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rhythms." Absolutely, 100%. I totally agree. I also ▓▌
▓████▓▌ believe this religious experience is common in some ▓▌
▓████▓▌ degree in all forms of music. Chocolate is part of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a very obscure African tradition in Peru and one ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that I had never heard of before. ▓▌
