After five years of releases Laws Of Motion finally deliver their
second compilation.
Often associated with the sound of West London and broken beats, Ben
Wilcox (of Sirkus fame) selection shows the more soulful house side
of this many faceted label. An exquisite roster of artists appear
with various mixes, including a new unreleased mix by Anthony
Nicholson of Laws Of Motion's golden boy Modaji.
Run by Chris Fleming, Laws of Motion is a label that owes as much to
Stevie Wonder as Derrick May, taking in Deodato and Scratch along the
way. From its beginnings with the 'Carl Craig of West London'
(Modaji) and the latin funk of Phil Asher's Back 2 Earth, the label
has combined funk, taste and musical nouse to a degree that has had
the likes King Britt, Jazzanova and Gilles Peterson as well as
critics from Osaka to New York knocking on their door for more.
This compilation represents some of the more house infused
highlights, the laws of 'e'-motion if you will and perhaps some of
the classiest soulful and deep club music of the last six years.
Tracks include Modaji - Jon Cutler's funky bass led arrangement of
'Into Something' adds polish to an underrated soul gem; Green Fridge
with 'And Love', a mesmeric track with a groove that is a total
tease; Modaji - as the summer sun creeps in light is the new dark on
this gorgeous reworking of 'See The Changes' from Anthony Nicholson;
BB Boogie - the B-side to 'Tell Him', 'Universal Music' is often
overlooked. Recheck and get ready to admire their unique and funky
style; Agent K - filthy funk for the ladies with 'Feed The Cat'.
Continuing on the ride is BB Boogie with the one - 'Tell Him' has
been dropped by Gilles Peterson and Paul 'Trouble' Anderson alike -
you can't run away from this groove, the bassline hunts you down;
Back 2 Earth - a tense, funky groove with 'Warp One' from Phil Asher
and crew is a subtle result of a few flirtations with techno and
soul; 'Naima' by Hipnotic a modern take on a musical force of nature
is never easy - pulled off and applauded by the likes of FK, Dego and
the techno mafia - Ian O'Brien takes the groove and chunks it up
some; Modaji once more, with 'One And The Same', the album fave gets
a re-rub from our friends in Japan Jazztronik. Shut your eyes and
'Light of the World' could almost be in the same room; In its
original form this was one of the highlights of Neon Phusion's debut
album. A sassy piece of funk to make the girls grind and the boys
blush, a kind of turn off the lights for the Y2K given a classy remix
from Philly's finest, King Britt.
