Release Notes:
Adam White (Vocals), James Nelan (Guitar), and Ronson (Bass) formed The Reason
in Hamilton, ON in 2003. Their first EP, Problems Associated With Running, was
released the same year and won Best Punk Recording at the 2004 Hamilton Music
Awards. In the year that followed The Reason underwent a number of member
changes resulting in a five-piece line-up of White, Nelan, Jeremy Widerman on
guitar, Cam Bordignon on drums and Sean Palmer on bass. The Reason took their
show on the road and subsequently signed to Smallman Records after the label
witnessed a performance so full of energy that it ended with post-show stitches
for White.
The Reason released their first full-length Ravenna on Smallman Records in
September of 2004. The album was strong enough to land the band over 200 shows
in the following year, including playing with Bane, Alexisonfire, Murphy╞s Law,
Bigwig, No Use For A Name, Strung Out, Moneen, Comeback Kid and Hopesfall and
shows at CMW, Wakefest, Edgefest, and Wakestock. The band╞s mix of punk and
aggressive pop triggered comparisons to Grade and early Get Up Kids. According
to Chart Magazine, The Reason had ⌠sharpened their attack, tightened up
arrangements and honed their harmonies to precision-drilled perfection÷.
In August 2005 the band rented a cottage in Ontario and began writing songs for
their sophomore album. The demo created through this session attracted the help
of Juno-winning producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Three Days Grace). After
hearing the new songs and seeing the band perform live, Brown agreed to work
with The Reason ⌠as a labour of love÷. During this time Palmer left the band and
The Reason was re-joined by their original bassist, Ronson. With Brown at the
helm and a new solid lineup, The Reason narrowed the focus of their songwriting,
channeling their energetic style into a more comprehensive approach.
The new album, Things Couldn╞t Be Better (to be released March 6, 2007), is in
some ways a departure from their previous album. The band╞s musical style has
evolved in the two years between recordings, leaving behind the more aggressive
tendencies of Ravenna in favour of more melodic vocals, keyboard undertones and
undeniably catchy songs. Influenced by bands such as Cursive and Hot Water
Music, and described by producer Gavin Brown as the Police meets Modest Mouse
and by others as The Clash meets the Cure, Things Couldn╞t Be Better is a
culmination of two years of passionate work and the perfect reflection of the
bands experiences during that time.
