- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -
Hearing 'Surrendered' is like receiving a phone call from an old friend. Mark
Morriss's voice, instantly familiar, married to the sparkling guitar sound
evoke memories of the post-Britpop nineties when the band enjoyed their
greatest success; a time when their debut album, 'Learning to Fly', stood out
as one of the most accomplished albums of the period, blending Stone Roses
dynamics, soul and beat influences with added bite. The template may not have
changed much since that heyday and, inevitably, through the rigours of time
The Bluetones' popularity may have dwindled, but they're still here and
they're still doing what they do best - producing bright, uplifting pop
songs.
Although released too early to be a summer hit 'Surrendered' has all the
right ingredients - a love song with a catchy melody, jaunty backbeat,
jangling guitar lines and Morris's typically joyous vocal. The initial feel
of the tune hints at chart-friendly mid-eighties' indie, perhaps more so than
the more obvious Madchester or Britpop assumptions. Imagine a successful
union between The Smiths and The Housemartins, if you dare. The tempo then
slows for the chorus, a subtle but effective change in structure that adds so
much to the song.
If this were to be released by The Kooks or any one of their brethren it
would be a hit without any shadow of a doubt. For now, I fear, The Bluetones
will continue to release singles of this calibre, going largely unnoticed but
serving as a lesson in the art of songwriting to all who care to listen.
