Release Notes:
North Londoners Tom Mansi & The Icebreakers are a 4
piece made up of Tom Mansi on double bass and lead
vocals, James Johnston on drums, Paul White on
guitar and Alian Man on keyboards and backing
vocals.
Born in North London in 1979 on the same day that
Charles Mingus died, Tom Mansi studied jazz at
Guildhall for a short while before moving to Cuba to
study double bass with some of the musical greats.
Influenced by a potpourri of jazz and blues masters
from the likes of Charles Mingus and John Coltrane
to Captain Beefheart and Willie Dixon to modern day
fusionists such Beck and Willie Mason. Tom met the
Icebreakers in a local youth big band about 8 years
ago. They've been playing together in different
bands and session outfits ever since.
Tom Mansi and the Ice Breakers' music is an
amalgamation of blues, country, jazz and folk. A
sound rooted in old school, acoustic, porch blues
whilst exploring heavy, angular funk and
experimenting with brushes of late night jazz.
The blues forms the core of Toms' lyrics. Inspired
by dark corners of the bars, clubs, hotels and
theatres he plays as a professional bassist. Drawing
on the Blues lyrical subject matter and preferring
to write in the early morning with a mild hangover.
Tom Mansi and the Icebreakers release a 7" single on
Kartel on 22 May 2006 and their debut album later in
the year. Catch them live at the Spitz Festival Of
Blues on the 12 April.
