"Leisure War is the Verbrilli Sound's second full CD
release. The previous album, the richly textured "Many
Coloured Butterflies", was released on Seattle's Sweet
Mother Recordings in 2000. It received excellent reviews
from XLR8R and Mixer magazine, and tracks from the album
found their way into the hands and heads of Roni Size,
LTJ Bukem, and DJ Krush, amongst others. "Views" was
licensed for the Wallpaper Mach 1.5 compilation
alongside songs by Thievery Corporation, Air, and
Jazzanova. " Leisure War ,' Verbrilli states." ...as an
idea, actually refers to two separate battles that take
place typically in the context of urban living. The
first battle is that waged by corporations, churches,
organizations, politicians, and individuals of power,
all vying for a slice or more of our free time. These
forces make a living by profiting from our leisure
decisions - that is, how we choose to spend our time,
and our money. The second battle is an individual one,
and it is our own fight for free time in a world that
seems to want to take so much of it from us. I'm
guessing these two wars have gone on for a long time,
and probably won't end anytime soon. I suppose this
album of mine, which doesn't try in any concise way to
present or study these ideas, is really just my own
little weapon to wield in times of war. It's a piece of
work created in my leisure time, designed perhaps to
take your ears hostage for awhile - maybe take a bit of
your money too if I'm lucky. It has a bunch of guitar
work on it and some real shakers and tambourines, a nice
vocal line, and of course a bunch of programming that
tries its best not to sound too programmed. The drums
and the bass are nice and solid, and everything seems to
float nicely over top of that. Several songs are quite
pretty and a few rock out a little bit, but all in all
it's a nice balanced affair and consistently upbeat. I
figure the best way to deal with a war like this is to
at least make sure you enjoy what you're wasting all
your time and money on."
"The Verbrilli Sound was created by Don Verbrilli and is
as much a philosophy of music as it is a verifiable
musical act. Verbrilli's claim is that the purest
musical creations are not in fact the work of an artist
or of a single mind, but are instead the creatures of an
intricate and mysterious process. Called the Verbrilli
Effect, the process involves the reception of available
atmospheric transmissions, plus a sequence of unforced
creative accidents. Theoretically, if the artist is in a
proper mindset and musical equipment is at hand, there
will be enough electromagnetic energy to attract any
number of patterned transmissions from a host of
sentient sources."
