Release Notes:
"We Are Family" was a 1979 dance hit song by Sister Sledge,
composed by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. Rodgers and Edwards
offered the song to Atlantic Records; although the record label
initially declined, the track was released as a single from the
album of the same name and quickly began to gain club and radio
play. It eventually went gold, becoming the number one R&B and
number two pop song on the charts. It was also the theme song for
the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates.
The song, now widely considered a gay anthem, was used as the 1979
theme song for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who won baseball's World
Series that year. Artists who have covered the song include the
Spice Girls and the Minneapolis riot grrrl band Babes in Toyland.
In addition, it was re-recorded in 2001 as a benefit record for
the September 11, 2001 attacks.
As for the Babes In Toyland, "We Are Family" peaked at #22 on the
Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1995.
