│ "BOAC: Modern Originalus │
│ │
│ There's a whole heck of a lot of good hip hop coming out │
│ of the Bay area these days. Quannum (formerly Solesides), │
│ Hiero, and Anticon have all put out amazing records │
│ recently, but other voices in underground have gone │
│ unacknowledged, namely BOAC. │
│ │
│ As an active member of The Earthlings crew, a dope hip hop │
│ outfit that has toured with Hiero among others, BOAC, the │
│ lead emcee, has been a standout. His style, in a word, is │
│ patient. He flows very well without the needless "spitting │
│ out da lyrics" that many emcees seem to have gotten │
│ involved in as of late. He lets his words come to him, and │
│ they seemingly "flow" as true hip hop lyrics should. This │
│ style can be appreciated on his debut Modern Originalus. │
│ │
│ "You start off naked, then you get clothed/ improved and │
│ educated then it's off to job placement/ but what if your │
│ family tree doesn't look like Pamela Lee?/ well then you │
│ stand and compete." With this verse on the track "Full │
│ Frontal Nudity," BOAC establishes his stance on the way │
│ people become successful in our country, and one can't │
│ help but apply this to the record industry as well. This │
│ particular track is one of the best on the album. The beat │
│ is fairly repetitive and the hook can get old, but once it │
│ is playing, it is hard not to bob one's head. It is an │
│ upbeat song, one of three standouts on the album, perfect │
│ for parties and long car rides. The other two are "The │
│ Unidentified Artform" and "Shush." │
│ │
│ But does BOAC ever get personal and less "bouncy?" Yes, │
│ while maintaining the same attitude throughout. On the │
│ track "Gearism" he confesses his paranoia of society and │
│ consumerism. He states, "Don't fuck with shit that │
│ everybody drools after, after school / Fools be after you, │
│ for your rad new shoes," making all of us a little more │
│ weary of our friends and family. But that is just what │
│ BOAC does so well. He is less of a story telling emcee, │
│ like the Pharcyde, yet is not political or preachy, as │
│ Anticon can sometimes be. Instead, he effortlessly │
│ combines the two, to form a sort of "statement" freestyle. │
│ BOAC is not trying to change us, he is just trying to keep │
│ us in check. │
│ │
│ Another great chill, thought provoking track is │
│ "Bibablab," where he gets into the "race issue" when it │
│ comes to emcees. This is admirable of him, as he gives a │
│ less abrasive stance on it than many other white emcees. │
│ "Boys in black attire, oops, I thought it was rap attire!/ │
│ plus I used to skate in shell-toes, parallel those two │
│ forms, black kids say/ 'snatch and attach him, latchin' │
│ him off, white kids are soft/ if I'm legitimate, little │
│ kids ask permission to kick rhymes to me/ and the sooner I │
│ humor them the seeds are planted, and I can't quit." │
│ │
│ Along with great tracks like "Amnesia", and "You Are What │
│ You Eat," Modern Originalus proves to be a welcome │
│ refreshment in hip hop, reminding us that life can be fun │
│ and powerful and painful and everything at the same time, │
│ or in this case, on the same album. " │
