Stan Getz was already an established jazz star when, at age 25,
he made his first recordings for Verve (represented by The Way
You Look Tonight and Stars Fell on Alabama in this collection).
Musical fashions changed several times in the ensuing years,
and personal problems took him out of the limelight on more
than one occasion; but Stan Getz never stopped being a star
until his death in 1991. His very personalized sound on the
tenor saxophone, heavily influenced by Lester Young, made Getz
a paragon of the cool; but, like Pres, he could also rise to
the occasion in the more heated atmosphere of the jam sessions
that producer Norman Granz favored in the Fifties. Once Creed
Taylor took over production duties at Verve in the Sixties,
Getz also showed a talent matched by few others and exceeded by
none in taking on challenging projects without sacrificing his
personality. One of these, the Jazz Samba album, opened a
whole new chapter in jazz music.
Any tenor saxophonist coming of age after 1950, even those who
do not reflect his influence, had to be impressed with Getz's
music. One would not necessarily assume, for example, that Joe
Henderson, one of the reigning figures of so-called hard bop,
would have developed his style from a Getzian base. Yet, as
his comments indicate, Getz played a critical role in the
formation of Henderson's style, and the two ultimately became
friends. Henderson's current stature at the pinnacle of jazz
can be traced back to his early fascination with Getz, and both
his selections and commentary provide a fascinating glimpse
into two tenor giants.
Original recordings produced by Norman Granz (tracks 1-6, 8, 9,
11, and 12) and Creed Taylor (tracks 7 and 10). Recorded
between 1957 and 1967 in Los Angeles, Hollywood, washington
D.C., New York and New Jersey.
