Comprising brothers MC Shockin' Shaun (b. Shaun
Harrison, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA) and DJ Super
Jay (b. James Harrison, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA),
plus their cousin Jock Box (b. Jacque Harrison,
Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA). After first being drawn
to the funk of James Brown and George Clinton, these
young men were invigorated by the East Coast rap
phenomenon. Super Jay grew particularly enamoured of
Grandmaster Flash, and ditched his previous instruments
(accordion and organ) to concentrate on DJing with a
local partner. He was subsequently joined first by his
brother, then cousin Jock Box, whose "human beatbox"
style resembled that of the Fat Boys' Darren Robinson.
Indeed, the Skinny Boys moniker was a tongue-in-cheek
reference to the latter band. Playing local skating
rinks, they eventually came to the attention of Mark
and Rhonda Bush. The former would offer the trio
production, while the latter managed them and wrote
their raps ("based on our ideas", the Skinny Boys
claimed).
