Merely in his mid-20s and, at first sight, showing
no signs of an authentic soul/R&B upbringing, Eli
"Paperboy" Reed is as much a real-deal revivalist
article as James Hunter or the Dap-Kings. Bred in
Boston but weaned on American blues in Mississippi
churches and sweaty Chicago nightclubs, Reed's
voice is a flexible amalgam of gospel mojo (see:
"Won't Give Up Without A Fight"), raw Van Morrison
emotion ("She Walks") and James Brown braggadocio
("[Doin' The] Boom Boom"). But it's his backing
band, the True Loves, that steals the show,
burning down your stereo wire to wire with
tighter-than-a-vice rock 'n' roll rhythms and
big-band-worthy horn interplay that will have you
lining up with whoever is in the room for
synchronized back-up dancing. Not to play down the
dexterity and delivery of Reed's pipes, nor the
nimble scale-sliding and note-nudging of his
passionate guitar, which complement each other
like destined lovers. Roll With You is by no means
the last or greatest chapter in a
bound-to-be-bountiful career for Reed, but it's an
alarmingly genuine and jolting introduction.
