│ "Hot Brazilian Beats from Otto, Max de Castro, Jair ││
│ Oliviera, Nacao Zumbi, Tom Ze, Patricia Marx, MadZoo, ││
│ SambaLoco Records, Patife and Markey!" ││
│──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────││
│ Trama ││
│ ││
│ Trama was set up in 1998 by founder Joao Marcello Boscoli. ││
│ Influenced heavily by his musical roots ( Joao's father ││
│ founded the Bossa Nova Movement and his uncle penned 'Girl ││
│ from Ipanema' ) he went on to champion the company said to ││
│ be the lynch pin of the musical revolution in Brazil. Last ││
│ year they played 25 dates on a massive European tour in a ││
│ bid to target new territory. ││
│ ││
│ Otto ││
│ ││
│ Having proved himself to be an astounding Brazilian ││
│ percussionist with respected mangue beat band Mundo Livre he ││
│ teamed up with mangue masters Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi. ││
│ He developed an interest in electronic techniques which he ││
│ used to develop his award winning debut album of 1998 - ││
│ 'Sambra Pra Burro'. His new album 'Condom Black' fuses his ││
│ early musical methods of folk rhythm with a "furnace of ││
│ anarchic funk" to produce expert beatcraft. ││
│ ││
│ Max de Castro ││
│ ││
│ Max formed a band in 1992 where he concentrated on his vocal ││
│ talents but these days he is rarely found outside of the ││
│ studio. Here he likes to focus on melody and rhythm as much ││
│ as his lyrics. De Castro is fascinated by the impact of ││
│ Brazilian and South American sounds on the dance music ││
│ spectrum and on life and politics as a whole. Last years' ││
│ collaboration with DJ Patife was hammered by the likes of ││
│ Fabio and Max is currently working on his second album ││
│ 'Orchestra Klaxon'. ││
│ ││
│ Jair Oliviera ││
│ ││
│ At a very early age Jair was part of a hugely successful ││
│ Brazilian band recording several albums and selling over 10 ││
│ million records. These days he is a sought after songwriter ││
│ and producer and is on the eve of releasing his second solo ││
│ album - 'Outro'. He is influenced by day to day life - ││
│ ranging from holidays with girlfriends to the atrocities of ││
│ 9/11 and in turn he has proven to be one of the most ││
│ influential songwriters to come out of Brazil. 'Outro' is an ││
│ adventurous record with complex arrangements which is ││
│ chilled and intense, traditional and contemporary. ││
│ ││
│ Nacao Zumbi ││
│ ││
│ Nacao spearheaded the mangue beat movement throughout the ││
│ 90s pioneering the use of heavily percussive Brazilian folk ││
│ music and enhancing it with studio trickery. They recorded ││
│ two albums with singer Chico Science whose unfortunate death ││
│ in 1997 spurred the remaining members of the collective to ││
│ continue their mission. They released his final works 'CSZN' ││
│ and he was also paid tribute to by Goldie who released ││
│ 'Chico-Death of a Rock Star' in his memory. The remaining ││
│ members (will release their latest self titled album on ││
│ Trama records in June of this year. ││
│ ││
│ Tom Zes ││
│ ││
│ Tom Ze is a legend in his own right - at age 65 he has been ││
│ referred to as Brazil's "most enduring maverick". He first ││
│ experimented with music as a means to a romantic end, using ││
│ his instruments and lyrics to 'woo' the ladies. Rolling ││
│ Stone Magazine dubbed him "the Father of Invention" ││
│ ││
│ He took Brazilian Pop to all new heights and in 1998 having ││
│ been pursued by David Byrne, Tom signed to Trama. ││
│ ││
│ Patricia Marx ││
│ ││
│ 27 year old Patricia has been singing for 20 years, has been ││
│ successful as part of a group, as a solo artist and has sold ││
│ over 500,000 records! Her latest album 'Respirar' is a ││
│ wicked mix of the traditional (Samba, MPB, Bossa Nova, ││
│ Blues, Soul and Jazz) and the contemporary (Hip-hop, broken ││
│ beat, breakbeat and drum & bass). For the album, she brought ││
│ in the electronic expertise of her husband Bruno E, the ││
│ multi talented desk scientist Mad Zoo and the very cutting ││
│ edge 4Hero. ││
│ ││
│ MadZoos ││
│ ││
│ While DJs Marky and Patife have spent the last few years ││
│ soaking up the limelight, MadZoo- artist and producer, has ││
│ been locked away in his Sao Paulo studio. MadZoo - a master ││
│ of the Brazilian Drum & Bass scene is the creative driving ││
│ force behind Marky and Patife. He started off producing hip ││
│ hop in the mid 80s before becoming the first break-beat ││
│ producer in the early 90s. ││
│ ││
│ He has recently toured Europe, remixed material for Hybrid, ││
│ Morcheeba and others and is about to release his new album - ││
│ 'Technozoide'. It comes out in May and "is a manifestation ││
│ of his travels and moods"à The album differs in style ││
│ throughout but ultimately "it showcases his talent for ││
│ incorporating various styles and languages into beautiful ││
│ landscapes that encapsulate his personality as a very open ││
│ minded producer." ││
│ ││
│ SambaLoco Records ││
│ ││
│ SambaLoco is an imprint of Trama and was set up by Bruno E ││
│ to support the army of talent working in Sao Paulo - and ││
│ Brazil as a whole. DJs, producers MCs and other acts were ││
│ signed, amongst them DJ Marky, DJ Patife, XRS and Drumagick. ││
│ SambaLoco became Trama's leading dance imprint and is the ││
│ reason that Brazilian Drum n Bass has become a world wide ││
│ phenomenon. ││
│ ││
│ Nova Vida Records ││
│ ││
│ Nova Vida is the sister label to SambaLoca and was set up ││
│ last year by Bruno E. The label focuses on soulful house ││
│ music and broken beats. We can expect to hear some very ││
│ interesting house and new jazz funk featuring Patricia ││
│ Marxamongst others ││
