Release Notes:
The Virginia ep comprises twelve tracks of demos, a cover,
live versions, a radio session, and b-sides. A highlight is
"You've Done It Again, Virginia" featuring Sufjan Stevens. An
accusatory tone is turned on the muse. "A cool tall drink of
water is all you ever wanted to be." The chorus could only
come from The National "brilliant sugar, brilliant sugar,
brilliant sugar turn over." Quirkily the piano on "Santa
Clara" was recorded at Benny's Wash and Dry. On "Blank slate"
they "keep it upstairs" while Springsteen's "Mansion on the
Hill" features some spine tingling strings. Familiar fare
comes with an early rough cut of "Slow Show" and "Fake Empire"
live where they "tiptoe through our shiny city with our
diamond slippers on" to the sound of the audience clapping.
Everything about this band is intriguing. If you are someone
of intelligence who loves subtle musical and lyrical nuances
performed with intensity you will love the National. Perhaps,
like the band themselves, this ep and accompanying film are
slow growers for the already converted. Listen to "Alligator"
and "Boxer" first then "stay out super late tonight, picking
apples, making pies" and discovering their captivating world.
