Desire for a Holy War is mayhem piled on top of mayhem piled
on top of squalls of caustic feedback. Furies spitting oaths
of shrouded vengeance from ancient tongues. Plague riders
dealing death on mounts of venomous ether, hooves pounding the
wild earth. Matthew Bower may have reached a watershed with
last year's Abyssic Lowland Hiss (Heavy Blossom) but it is
with Desire for a Holy War that he has come to conquer. Never
has Skullflower sounded so severe or remorseless.

Brand new studio album from Matthew Bower's Skullflower, in a
classically wiped-out acid rock style. The guitar playing here
is as phenomenally wailing as the last few live shows, with
the aspect of drunken Wagnerian theatricality translated into
vectors of Valkyrie feedback and endless ascensions of
bombastic fuzz on fuzz. Some great titles here too, Your
Cities Your Tombs, Moses Conjured A Blood Niagara, the latter
being one of the most thoroughly erased-by-noise rock-informed
blasts of Bowerüfs career, with a dense, almost Hijokaidan-
style feel warped with crumpling guitar tones and what sounds
like pink thunder demolishing huge Industrial structures. Less
technicolour than Tribulation and more immediately unforgiving
than Orange Canyon Mind, this feels like the ultimate
manifestation of Bower's monomaniacal pursuit of the apex of
flesh and metal. Highly recommended.
