tha afterset sessions is the second full-lenght independent acid
jazz cd project to come from dj i.n.c. the first was back in the
fall of 1996 and it was titled tha afterset. the name remains the
same, with the addition of "sessions", because that is what each
one of these songs represent, fun-filled studio afterset sessions
with the producer, artist, musicians and engineer who
participated.
dj i.n.c. is a chicago deejay veteran. having put in time with
college radio partner torin j. edmond at the university of
illinois in champaign / urbana on 89.3 fm wbml on torinÆs
"underground audio" mix show to bringing their show home and
throwing parties at the akaÆs nightclub & the edge of the looking
glass to spinning at chicagoÆs hottest clubs like the red dog,
warehouse, the garage, art bar and funky buddha lounge, dj i.n.c.
is currently the two year resident deejay at the sharkbar chicago
on friday and saturday nights and rituals open mic poetry on
sunday nights. dj i.n.c. knows how to please a variety of crowds
and thatÆs just what he does with tha afterset sessions. the
roster of participants reads like a whoÆs who of the chicago jazz
music and spoken word community. world renowned saxophone legend
sonny seals leads off the list along with contributions from the
original fat time band, mark stampley and the eclipse of the moon
band, kevin morrissitte from the night kings and mike lipsey. as
it was with the first afterset cd, there are several spoken word
pieces set-to the musical production of dj i.n.c. the spoken word
artists featured are two of chicagoÆs best in von (who is working
on her second self-published book), and the group still black see
consisting of orron kenyetta (who just released a self-published),
720 and dread. all of the pieces are entertaining while at the
same time offering social commentary. itÆs a good listening.
longtime deejay partner and fellow producer dj ijaazali
contributes a hip-hop meets steppers delight on the cd. having put
in time at northwestern universityÆs 89.3 fm wnur sunday night
hip-hop show and spinning at the funky buddha lounge, the garage,
the sharkbar, northbeach club and currently a resident deejay at
the art bar, ijazzali can also cater to a variety of crowds and
does just that with his contribution.
the songs on the cd are sure to please any and all listeners. the
hip-hop beats are complemented by the live jazz instrumentation
and the spoken work pieces add just the right touch. there are
definitely songs for the steppers throughout the entire project,
just go through and pick one. people make the world go round, the
chicago steppers cut the bubby duck (original & remix) as well as
dj ijazzaliÆs summer jaaz, vanÆs earthquake, mark stampleyÆs
johnnyÆs groove, the very hip-sounding true school and viggi-j mix
