: In the beginning there was Bloodflower. A Wellington :
: experimental rock band fronted by Jordan Reyne. :
: Bloodflower gigged intensively ( and sometimes :
: disasterously [EDITORS NOTE]) during their 2-year :
: incarnation. They disbanded in late 96 when guitarist :
: BarnOwl Dromgool decided to relinquish his career as a :
: guitarist. :
: :
: During this time vocalist Jordan Reyne had also been :
: pursuing solo work with Deepgroves Records. Employing :
: Jaz Murphy (from Bloodflower) on bass, Reyne developed :
: an experimental style of her own, mixing electronic :
: instruments and samples with live sounds. :
: The release of her debut single Long Way to Climb :
: (1995), saw Reyne nominated for a New Zealand Music :
: award (1995) - how ridiculous[EDITORS NOTE]. Her debut :
: album Birds of Prey (Festival Records 1997) earned her :
: another nomination at the New Zealand Music awards :
: (1997) and won her the Wellington City Council National :
: Achievement Award at the 1997 Wellington Music Awards. :
: Birds of Prey was critically acclaimed both nationally :
: and overseas (see reviews section). Songs from the :
: album made top 20 request on commercial radio and top :
: 10 request on student networks in 1997. :
: Following the albums success Creative New Zealand and :
: Fender funded a 42 date national tour organised by :
: Reyne and Kelly. The tour featured multi-media :
: performances with workshops for schools (conducted by :
: Reyne) on sequencing, sampling and the web as new arts :
: forum.s :

: Late in 1997 Reyne and Murphy convinced Dromgool to :
: pick up his guitar, go forth and make noise. The band :
: was re-formed û this time playing a selection of Reynes :
: own songs as well as new material generated by the band :
: û and going by the name of Jordan Reyne & Dr Kevorkian. :
: At one of the bands Bar Bodega gigs, they met Zed Kelly :
: û a keyboard player and structural engineer from :
: Hamburg (Germany). :
: After playing The Big Day Out and Have a Day festivals :
: in 1998 the bands drummer Rikki Cooch left to study in :
: Dunedin. Dr Kev had also been spotted by the infamous :
: Michel Goth (aka Michel Membra and Michel Rowland) :
: maker of noise and destroyer of bands. Taking a fancy :
: to everyone in the band except Jordan, Michel asked :
: both Barney and Jaz to join his own band "Disjecta :
: Membra". They politely agreed and Dr Kev as a live band :
: were no more. :

: EDITORS NOTE: Membra (having gone through an aditional :
: 237 members since that time) have also disbanded and :
: Michel is being hunted by several other poeple who :
: would like to know all about the pie story. :

: Jordan started to write material with Zed. The duos :
: music began to centre around Reynes sequenced/ sampled :
: sounds and vocals. :

: During this time Reyne also guested (as vocalist/ :
: lyricist) on a track by Breaks Co-op. The track û :
: Transista û went to number 1 on student radio request :
: lines (early 98). She also constructed and ran the :
: incredibly popular NZ Unsigned website û then home to :
: over 400 bands. :

: In late 98 Reyne secured NZ Arts Council funding for a :
: second album and a distribution deal with Universal :
: Music New Zealand. Deciding to use some of the material :
: she had written with Jaz and Zed, Reyne conceived Dr :
: Kevorkian & the Suicide Machine û a studio group :
: including Jaz, Zed, BarnOwl and engineer Simon :
: Holloway. :
: The Ironman was recorded in 1999 and is set for release :
: in New Zealand on May 4 2000. :

: Before the Ironmans release, Reyne decided to release :
: Birds of Prey to MP3.com.au (the Australian MP3 site). :
: On 25th February 2000 Reynes songs were number 1 on :
: both the Industrial Charts and the Experimental Charts. :
: On the album charts Birds of prey is the number 1 :
: experimental release and number 21 overall. The artist :
: charts (showing downloads by artist) show she is the :
: 6th most popular Alternative Artist on the site. :

: Also in 1999, Reyne was asked to join a project for the :
: Festival of the Arts 2000. The project û known simply :
: as Baxter û involved various recording artists putting :
: music to a James K Baxter poem of choice. :
: The recorded versions of these songs were released in :
: February this year û stock sold out in the first day. :
: Now on its third printing the CDÆs success reflects :
: Baxters status as one of New Zealands most infamous and :
: celebrated poets. :
: The songs - including Dr Kevorkian & the Suicide :
: Machines High Country Weather - will be performed live :
: at the Festival of the Arts in March this year. :
