▓████▓▌ notable exception of Berber singers from Kabylia ▓▌

▓████▓▌ and brutality has produced plenty of heartfelt ▓▌
▓████▓▌ literature but relatively little in the way of ▓▌

▓████▓▌ The release of Souad Massi's debut album 'Raoui' on ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Universal France has changed all that. Massi was ▓▌
▓████▓▌ born into a family of artists and musicians. She ▓▌
▓████▓▌ studied the classical arabo-andalusian music of her ▓▌
▓████▓▌ homeland, alongside western classical music before ▓▌
▓████▓▌ striking off on her own path in her late teens. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ After a stint in a flamenco group called Les ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Trianas d'Alger, Massi eventually found her own ▓▌
▓████▓▌ voice as a solo artist, with her backing band ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Atakor. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ Her classy blend of rock, folk, chaabi (popular ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Algerian music) and North African roots knew quick ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and easy success. Her outspoken stance on the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ endless sufferings of her homeland however made her ▓▌
▓████▓▌ some shadowy enemies and her life became ▓▌
▓████▓▌ increasingly difficult, especially after she was ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sacked from her day job in a Town Planning ▓▌
▓████▓▌ practice. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ On the verge of giving it all up, Massi was invited ▓▌
▓████▓▌ to the 'Women Of Algeria' festival in Paris in 1999 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and her appearance sparked a bush fire of adulation ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and buzz. Mercury Records quickly signed her and a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ debut album was recorded produced by Bob Coke, a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sympathetic soul famous for his work with Ben ▓▌

▓████▓▌ topped charts, polls and prizes throughout Europe ▓▌
