Ridiculously good disco-dub-steel pan riddims from
late seventies group Steel an' Skin here unearthed
and reissued by the kind folks at Honest Jon's.
Steel an' skin were a unit composed of youung nightclub
musicians born in Ghana, Nigeria, St. Kitts, Trinidad
and the U.K who once performed with Ginger Johnson's
Afrikan Drummers, a highlife band based in and around
Honest Jon's base at Ladbroke Grove who quite easily
define the cultural and musical dialogue of the time with
a succinctly unironic and outreaching mix of musical forms
that sweetly touches the soul and begs your feet to dance.
'Afro Punk Reggae Dub' is the shocking cut on the A-side,
coming on like the lost Slits/ESG/Liquid Liquid cut that you
never heard, and far exceeds expectations, just check the
samples and clear yourself some floorspace. 'Reggae is
here once again' on the other side is equally stunning,
a lithe dub bassed disco groove with lovely vocals and
strickly good feelings conveyed so sweetly it hurts.
