*STRICTLY LIMITED HAND-STAMPED 7"* It's been almost 4 years
since the release of Deaf Center's hugely acclaimed "Pale
Ravine" album, surely one of the definitive Modern
Classical/Widescreen releases of the last few years. Since
then the band (made up of Norway's Erik Skodvin and Otto
Totland) have been taking their time getting the follow-up
together while Skodvin has released much sought-after material
under the Svarte Greiner moniker for the Type and A Room
Forever imprints. This precious 7" has been in the making for
a while (in fact we can't quite believe it's finally here) -
pressed up in a limited run of 400 copies for the world that
will no doubt barely touch the sides - demand for anything
remotely associated with Deaf Center is crazy, as so many of
you will no doubt already know. The material itself is
overwhelming, the title track sounding like Bernard Herrmann's
classic soundtrack to Taxi Driver, stripped and enriched with
layered elements that at turns remind us of Angelo
Badalementi, Arvo Part, Ry Cooder, and Alberto Iglesias - and
it's just one of the most arresting and beautiful things
you'll hear this year. Over to the flipside, and there are two
further tracks of dense bliss, the first "Ashes" layers
strings to form a harrowing mass of cathartic tension, while
"Close" introduces a shimmering, evocative piano trail to
nudge your vision out of focus and send you into a daydream
retreat. It's epic, utterly beautiful material and, no doubt,
one of the most collectable and precious releases of the year.
Essential Purchase - this isn't a release you want to miss out
on!
