As Happy As I Can" is Lichtenberg┤s second album in 2007,
following hot on the heels of "Don┤t Let Them Down". Both
celebrate the 10th anniversary of renown vienna based
musician Franz Reisecker (a guitar-player principally,
but definitely not limited to that instrument...) working
and releasing his music under the name of the german
writer and physician Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742 -
1799).
"Don┤t Let Them Down" was met by huge critical acclaim,
yet even the most accurate reviews failed to cover the
whole sensual and musical logic of that album, something
only an experienced, yet still spirited and curious
musician like Franz Reisecker can achieve.
With "As Happy As I Can" he completes the process of
re-establishing his musical alter ego Lichtenberg, as
recent years saw him focused on his work with Trio
Exklusiv, a jazz-electronica groove-extravaganza. On "As
Happy As I Can" he does so by revisiting 10 songs/tracks
of Lichtenberg┤s past releases, re-inventing and
re-recording them and adding a brandnew instrumental
track ("Lost"), together making up a fascinating,
multi-faceted package that avoids all the selfindulgent
bullshit of a conventional "Best Of" or the average
Remake/Remodel-concept (Remixes anybody?) and instead
opts for something that simply works on its own, on the
strength of the new approaches and treatments with their
convincing results.
"As Happy As I Can" can also be heard as a statement for
giving all the ideas and alternative choices that usually
get lost in the creative tour-de-force that assembling an
album (or even just one song/track) can be, some more
air. There┤s even 3 tracks of "Don┤t Let Them Down" here,
underlining what Franz Reisecker says: "In music there┤s
always chance, things evolve constantly". It┤s really
great fun to compare, for instance, the new "Adele 2" to
its sibling on the album before - here we have a quite
energetic song recorded with a full band that also sees
Reisecker┤s vocal-style change for a more immediate
performance that let┤s the "original" version with its
more laid back attitude shine in a new light. Topically
dealing with one of Gustav Klimt┤s paintings on both
versions not only the spoton lyrics - "she is a 135
million dollar baby" - are simply, well, priceless!
Other highlights of "As Happy As I Can" include the
opener "Am Fluss" where Stermann & Grisseman two very
popular austrian leftfield (radio-)comedians and actors
impressively prove that, while they may not be natural
born singers, they do understand how to make their voices
work in a way that make a beautiful piece of music and a
great german lyric even more beautiful. Or "Rigoletto",
one of the early Lichtenberg pieces that got a lot of
attention as it was almost played to death on specialised
(and beloved) austrian radio-broadcast "Im Sumpf", as
well as being used for a TV-advertisment. Franz
Reisecker: "I always wanted to do something more with
that piece, but as it got picked up by radio so quick,
and with the TV-thing only now the time felt right to
actually do it". With "Rigoletto Part 2" we get to visit
the places where Lichtenberg takes his early
singnature-tune in 2007. It sits perfectly and
beautifully on this album, where almost without effort
(but boy, that sure was a lot of work!) instrumental
"electronic" tracks seem to blend in with songs played
with a band, showcasing that Lichtenberg does give a damn
about the limitations of genre but strives to realise the
potential of his ideas with whatever musical means are
bound to do them the most aesthetical justice.
Which leads us to "Utopic" a thrilling example of how
much pop-appeal Lichtenberg can develop in 2007, as well
as also featuring the lyrics that give the album it┤s
title, "I┤m as happy as I can". They also work as - if
you think about it - a not-so-simple-as-it-seems mission
statement of the musician Lichtenberg and the human Franz
Reisecker.
