Jason Webley admits to making a ôkind of rock recordö this time around, but
unless you consider eastern European folk, circus punk and romantic ballads to
be rock than I think youÆll be surprised by the exotic sounds of The Cost Of
Living. If youÆve read this site with any regularity you know I have a thing for
gypsy folk-punk. Not the over the top variety of Gogol Bordello, but more along
the lines of Devotchka or even some of the Pogues early cross-pollination of
celtic punk and gypsy folk. The new record is all one could have hoped for as a
fan of this type of music.

Using a full band for the first time, JasonÆs songs have a more propulsive sound
than in the past. The members of the band are acclaimed musicians and all solo
artists in their own right (they are acting as the opening bands on the current
tour), so musically the record is very satisfying. I havenÆt heard anything on
the new record that is as immediate (read: novelty) as ôEleven Saintsö but over
time these songs may have more emotional resonance than that clever but
nonsensical tune.
