Every now and then in the evolving world of house music, producers
will come along and re-write the creative script, for Hipp-e and
Halo also known as H-Foundation this certainly applies. As DJ's
they are both among the respected in the world and their
productions have been burning dancefloors to their core for years.
Soma Records are proud to present 'Environments', their eagerly
anticipated debut album which is destined to be a must have for any
lover of quality house music.
Hipp-e and Halo have been immersed in music since they were very
young, Hipp-e originally from Denver began Djing at the tender age
of sixteen and built up a reputation as an excellent DJ across
America. Halo, a native of Chicago began working in Hip House
Records when he was a mere nine years old, his education in house
definitely started young and he progressed to Djing and developing
his technique when he was only twelve.
He was soon a favourite in the Chicago club scene while he was not
even old enough to be let in. Their friendship developed as they
were booked to play clubs and raves together, this blossomed until
the next logical step was to start making tracks.
They relocated to San Diego and began to fuse the jacking beats of
Chicago with smoked out sounds of the Pacific. Their first release
'420 Sessions' appeared on Siesta in 1998 and the standard was set
for the future. Their floor shaking dubby production style made the
house music community sit up and take notice as their sound
engulfed the world's dancefloors and DJ's across the globe fell in
love with a sound that bridged the gap between deep house grooves
and dancefloor appeal. Their following 'H-Foundation' EP was
championed by Pete Tong as their tracks crossed over into the boxes
of house, techno and progressive DJ's. They are regarded as
pioneers of the West Coast sound and have been producing music
individually, together and with other likeminded producers ever
since. Their remix work has included Soma buddy's Silicone Soul
with the massive 'Chic-O-Laa' and The Chemical Brothers.
Their DJ careers were taking off also around this time and they
have since taken their music throughout the world from Buenos Aries
to their residency at London's premier underground club Fabric.
There was pressure for them to make an album at this time but they
felt it was more important to tour and come back with an
accomplished album that would demonstrate the way they were
evolving as producers. In this time they also set up their own
labels, Hipp-e with Nightshift and Halo with Bluem, to develop
their own individual productions.
'Environments' is the culmination of two and a half years hard
work, a mature collection of sophisticated tracks, which represent
Hipp-e and Halo's musical influences, inspirations and evolution as
producers. Live musicians provide the authenticity to create the
ultimate listening experience that encapsulates elements of dub,
jazz, funk and house music. The result is a listening experience
that draws from their environment, past and present and looks to
the future.
The result has seen Hipp-e and Halo come together with live
musicians to give a full sonic landscape punctuated with references
to jazz, dub, house and funk. For them the live element was
essential and when a local jazz funk musician called Davey B
approached them at a gig in Byron Bay they were interested in what
he could offer. Byron Bay is considered to be the creative hub of
Australia with a bustling community of artists, musicians and DJ's.
Davey B handed H-Foundation a demo tape from his Jump Beats /
Twenty Four 7 collective and Eric and Brian were amazed by the
freestyle jazz funk fusion which they heard.
The album 'Environments' is sure to surprise people with its depth
and musical sensibility. They have crafted a mature piece of work
that captures their vibe perfectly. After two and a half years of
touring the world Djing they have recorded an album that
encapsulates their unique sound from jazz to funk to sleazy deep
house, this is the music of their lives, the sound of their
environment.
The album is sure to surprise people who are expecting twelve
floorfillers but for Hipp-e and Halo this is a natural progression.
Kicking off with the jazzy 'Environments' intro we are cast into a
freestyle jazz introduction that introduces the key players and
musicians on the album. The tempo is raised with the thoroughly
deep 'Soul Searchin', which blends perfectly into 'Tonight', a
female vocal that is reminiscent to those timeless early Strictly
Rhythm releases. This quality track is more for the dancefloor with
its strings and shimmering hats and is sure to be a DJ favourite.
'Nature' is a deep and delicious slice of house with an organic
feel, while 'Doo Ya!' is a gorgeous deep dubbed out aural
excursion. 'Scenario' is a down tempo track with guy talking about
one of the subjects closest to the H-Foundation boys hearts ? weed
! This smokin' cut is laced with eastern percussion and dubby
effects. Next up is a song written by Hipp-e when he was in tour
and missing his girl. 'Feelin' a jazz house track with live
instruments and a killer male vocal that works fantastically.
'Broken Arrow' continues the jazzy vein and is an excellent broken
beat track with sub bass and 303 squelches. 'New Funk Theory' is
the biggest club track on the album and is guaranteed to cause
dancefloor mayhem with it's turbo injection of funk. Guaranteed to
get the party started, watch this one fly next summer. Following
on, 'So Fine' is a devastatingly dirty and sleazy house groove with
a killer bassline and hypnotic allure. For this track the vocal was
recorded in one go with "" off-the-wall rants about tobasco sauce
and sexy girls. 'Passage Of Time' was originally out early 2002 to
rave reviews, for this interpretation the boys have dubbed it out
in spectacular style. 'Slaying The Dragon' is the trippy dark
downtempo finale that closes the album in fine style.
This is a journey through the sound of H-Foundation, they will be
taking their live extravaganza on tour in 2003.
