█ Born in Jamaica, raised in Canada and eventually setting up shop in Brooklyn,
█ E-Dot wields a pen guided by a melting pot of influences. HERO is a joint
█ venture between E and long-time co-conspirator, producer, vocalist and
█ all-around name worth remembering, Darp Malone. The T. Dot virtuoso produced
█ the entire HERO LP and provides the soul to E-Dot's reality raps. (That's one
█ "dot" too many) With Malone's R&B elements seamlessly integrated rather than
█ feeling tacked on as an afterthought, you realize the title HERO can apply to
█ anyone who betters the world with their art. These heroes don't respond to
█ cries for help or lights in the sky, instead they appear anywhere a strong
█ voice or melody is needed.

█
█ E-Dot employs a level-headed attack on the stress and strain of everyday
█ life. The better part of the self-titled LP concerns the ups and downs of
█ romantic entanglements; such as "Trust," "What We Gonna Do," "Denial," and
█ "All About." Each track is handled with unique care to discern itself from
█ the pack, both sonically and lyrically. The result is almost always uplifting
█ and usually danceable. Even the bleak prospects of being shipped off to war
█ on "Mogadishu" can inspire listeners to clap in unison. Darp Malone takes
█ center stage during the bass-heavy "On My Side" and struggles with weekly
█ monotony and monogamy on "Lonely Sunday." As a singer, Darp's vocals are
█ soothing and never forced. As a producer, Malone mixes keys, synths and
█ various instruments with a strong emphasis on melody; blending genres for
█ soundscapes which could be used for singing, rhyming or just plain vibing.

█ Although these plain-clothed heroes possess the means to remain
█ self-sufficient, the LP does not play out without a supporting cast.
█ Wordsworth takes aim at crooked cops with "They Don't Care," Sage and Tia
█ Thomas belt out hooks on their respective joints and Loer Velocity chips in
█ two guest verses, oddly enough on consecutive tracks. E-Dot sums up the duo's
█ mission on "Be Aware": "They want me to perpetuate an image, a stereotype,
█ when I really got a lot more to give." HERO strikes a rare genre-straddling
█ balance under a Hip Hop umbrella. It's hard not appreciate the symmetry of
█ two artists with opposite talents connecting on every level. Forget the
█ clichΘ lines about masks and capes, one thing HERO will save is a spot on
█ your year-end Top 10 list.
