ESC Bringing you another fine release.
This time we bring to you:
"Lee Morgan - Expoobident"
The term "expoobident" was coined by jazz
vocalist-philosopher Babs Gonzalez in the late 1950s as an
all-purpose noun-adject-verb to provide the most positive
description possible. And this 1960 recording session from
Vee-Jay in Chicago is one of Lee Morgans finest. He had left
Dizzy Gillespies band in 1957 and joined Art Blakeys Jazz
Messengers in 1958. Art is on this date and, in essence,
this recording is very similar to the best of Blakeys output
of the time.
Morgan,looking lean and mean on the cover, stares you down
and musically puts his best foot foward. His playing is
assured and ringing with clarity. The title tune, written by
pianist Eddie Higgins, is an attractive mid-tempo
composition and is noted for Morgans well articulated
playing. My other favorite is Wayne Shorters "Fire" which is
a catchy line featuring a hard-blowing Clifford Jordan. The
two standards, "Just In Time" and "Easy Living," reveal
Morgan's ability to play ballads with a fine sense of
dynamics and sensitivity. The session concludes with four
alternate takes to double your pleasure
The quintet appropriately plays hot and cool. One of the
biggest surprises is hearing Higgins play in a hard bop
format. He could easily be mistaken for any of the regular
Vee-Jay pianists like Wynton Kelly, and certainly time has
not been fair to him insofar as public recognition is
concerned. At the time, Higgins, originally from New
England, was in the midst of a long run as the house pianist
at Chicagos London House. His recordings in the l980s on
Sunnyside show a sensitive and swinging player. He now often
accompanies his wife, singer, Meredith D Ambrosio. Jordan
(billed here as "Cliff") shows fine sinew and would evolve
into one of the most respected tenormen of the 1970s and
1980s. Davis and Blakey provide a steady pulse and Art
typically provides further incentive for these young players
via his press roll.
When this date was recorded in October 1960, sessions like
this were cranked out every five minutes so it is easy to
file and forget such a meeting. Rock-and-roll was openly
regarded as "children's music" and it was prime time for
some of our greatest jazz musicians. I always felt that
Morgan's earliest Blue Note sessions were his best, but this
one is right up there.
