I distinctly recall, even now, seeing a young woman with bleached blonde hair opening that weeks Top Of The Pops with her band. The song she performed was called 'Iko Iko' and the artist in question was Natasha. Immediately I was hooked on the song, thanks to it's tribal drums, sing-a-long chorus and that blend of Bananarama meets Fun Boy Three style charm. Happy memories indeed. 'Iko Iko' inevitably flew up the charts, making it's way into both the UK Top 10 and my all time favourite records list. Yet it wasn't really typical of the Natasha 'sound' as such. Something I discovered once her debut album 'Captured' was released. This point leads us nicely onto the double album of delights in question, as this collection opens with the original running sequence of that same classic LP. The Captured album, with it's iconic cover of Natasha caged with a rather aggitated looking black cat, could essentially be split into two styles, the first of which was pure pop. Alongside 'Iko Iko' there were a couple of earlier singles, both hugely commercial in design and very reminiscent of peak period Blondie. 'I Can't Hold On', which is one of those great lost moments of 80s pop history, thunders along with a frantic arrangement and incredibly infectious chorus, whilst 'Strangest Feeling' is a bit edgier, almost psychotic to a point, but still unmistakably commercial through and through. Other tracks such as'Tease' and 'Don't Touch Me' retain that alluring edge but remain instant at the same time. The flip side to all these poppy gems was something a little more music noire and probably represents more of the side that Natasha would explore as the 80s went on. The glorious 'Boom Boom Room' for example, tells the tale of the lost souls to be found in one of America's darkest haunts. It gave Natasha a second hit and planted the seed for my lifelong appreciation of her work. Disc Two for the most part encompasses material recorded for her second album,'Don't Walk Away'. This was a much more of a personal album than 'Captured' as all of it's 10 tracks were self penned. It firmly puts to rest any suggestion that Natasha was a puppet in any way, shape or form. Produced by Dave Bascombe and Tony Cox, this strong set of songs benefited from a clearer, more sparkling production. Her voice had also grown considerably in the three years between albums and now packed great emotional resonance. 'Stay With Me', one of the finest ballads of her career, very clearly reflects that at the time the singer was going through a marriage break-up, a theme also picked up on in the title track, which incidentally has a keyboard hook eerily similar to tv's 'Eastenders' theme, although 'Don't Walk Away' was recorded some months before the show first aired. In terms of themes, the album benefited for encompassing more than just songs about love. 'Tell Me What You Want' offers a none too subtle nod to girl power (the chorus's lyrics might remind you of something from 1996), whilst 'Julie's Hero' tackles celebrity obsession. And on the Big Country inspired lead single 'Homeland', Natasha sings of her native Scotland, and for the wild lands she has always felt so comfortable with. Both discs are crammed with quality extras including all the b-sides and previously unreleased gems such as the gospel fuelled 'No Mistaking Love', as well as new mixes of of the singles 'The Boom Boom Room' and 'Don't Walk Away'. The title of this collection actually comes from a caption that was featured last year during an airing of 'Iko Iko' on BBC's 'TOTP2', that any news on Natasha was 'lost in the mists of time'. Not anymore!
