Release Notes:

Maybe the blues would have ceased to exist without
Big Bill Broonzy... or at least, it would have had
much more trouble escaping from its ghetto. Broonzy
was the first bluesman to appear in front of a
white audience at Carnegie Hall in 1938, and the
first bluesman to be invited to appear in France &
Europe from 1951 onwards. An imposing figure with a
strong personality, Broonzy had a clear, convincing
voice and played the guitar precisely; for years he
was a symbol for the blues. As a pioneer in the
20's he invented new forms, structures and sounds
that became the style from which modern blues was
born; he also knew how to develop his music, either
adapting it or returning to his roots when called
for. Open, warm and generous, Big Bill launched and
accompanied many careers, including that of Muddy
Waters. His considerable output made him a monument
in blues history, not only for singers and
musicians but also for fans the world over.
