Chip Taylor's place in rock history is secure as the author of "Wild Thing" and
"Angel of the Morning," so it's just a bonus that he sails into his golden years
as an articulate folkie, too. In his current incarnation, Taylor is doing some
of his best work on albums such as 2005's Red Dog Tracks, a duet project with
fiddler Carrie Rodriguez, and the earthy political tunes on New Songs of
Freedom.
While a lot of topical songwriters tend toward the strident, Taylor's easy,
folksy style makes his messages more powerful as they creep into view. Anchored
by a lonesome country arrangement, songs such as the opening "Dance With a Hole
In Your Shoe" go down easy despite the obvious message in the lyrics.
To be precise, these "new" songs weren't really earmarked for this album. It's a
collection of tracks recorded for other projects, such as the upcoming Songs
From a Dutch Tour and 2001's Black & Blue America. Although there are some overt
production touches, such as the Kennedy and Reagan snippets in the title track,
the album's charm is in its quieter back-porch moments.
When Taylor is strumming his guitar and singing in little more than a whisper in
the opening of "Black and Blue America," he commands attention with quiet grace.
