ªª▓ --- ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Serenata Guayanesa is a vocal and instrumental quartet playing typical Venezuelan folk ▓ªª
ªª▓ music. Wanting to boost their popularity in the Venezuelan capital, the four members of the ▓ªª
ªª▓ new group obtained their first recording contract in 1972 with the company "Palacio de la ▓ªª
ªª▓ Mu'sica" (Music Palace), which put their recordings out under the label "Decca-London" ▓ªª
ªª▓ (although the group were not formally contracted to Decca). That year a record ôSerenata ▓ªª
ªª▓ Guayanesaö appeared, with a different content to their first recording. The numbers "El ▓ªª
ªª▓ Sapo" and the aguinaldo "Casta Paloma" by the Bolivaran composer Alejandro Vargas appeared, ▓ªª
ªª▓ as well as the first composition by Iva'n Pe'rez Rossi (integrante), the aguinaldo "?Donde ▓ªª
ªª▓ esta' San Nicola's?", which became a hit later. However, their real success began with the ▓ªª
ªª▓ album "Serenata Guayanesa Volume 2" (1973), with the songs "Calypso del Callao" (composed by ▓ªª
ªª▓ the "Sociedad de Amigos del Calypso de El Callao") and the classic Venezuelan Christmas ▓ªª
ªª▓ number "Aguinaldo Criollo" (by the writer Isabel de Ume'rez and composer Luis Morales ▓ªª
ªª▓ Bance), both great hits, as well as the llanero number "Fiesta en Elorza" by the Venezuelan ▓ªª
ªª▓ musician, composer and singer Eneas Perdomo. In 1978 the group decided to record an album of ▓ªª
ªª▓ Christmas music, which was not widely known across Venezuela. This album, entitled "Serenata ▓ªª
ªª▓ Guayanesa Volume 5: Popular Venezuelan Aguinaldos " included the hits "Corre Caballito" ▓ªª
ªª▓ (anonymous) and "El Furruquero" (Iva'n Pe'rez Rossi). On this album the groupÆs singers, ▓ªª
ªª▓ together with the singers and drummers Mauricio Castro and Ce'sar Pe'rez Rossi, played their ▓ªª
ªª▓ own accompaniment on instruments like the chineco and the furruco (vinculados for Christmas ▓ªª
ªª▓ music). In 1981 their contract with "Palacio de la Mu'sica" expired and they signed with the ▓ªª
ªª▓ Organizacio'n Diego Cisneros Sonorodven, who brought out an album of their greatest hits, ▓ªª
ªª▓ including one new number "Sen~or Gaba'n". That contract also expired quicly and they signed ▓ªª
ªª▓ with Sonogra'fica. By this time the group was established as the biggest in Venezuelan ▓ªª
ªª▓ popular music. They then hit upon the idea of making an album of music for children, called ▓ªª
ªª▓ "Cantemos con los nin~os" (LetÆs sing with the children), which included specially written ▓ªª
ªª▓ songs, poems set to music and traditional folk songs. This album was again a great hit, even ▓ªª
ªª▓ among adults, with the numbers "La Pulga y el Piojo" and "Este Nin~o Don Simo'n". It is ▓ªª
ªª▓ interesting to note that one very sentimental song was called "En Mi Pueblo Habi'a Un Ri'o" ▓ªª
ªª▓ (In my village there was a river), which told the story of a village in which the native ▓ªª
ªª▓ plants and wildlife died out. ▓ªª

ªª▓ In 1983 Sonogra'fica brought out a series of records in homage to the nationalist leader ▓ªª
ªª▓ Simo'n Boli'var including two albums with songs and fragments of speeches by Boli'var ▓ªª
ªª▓ himself. The actor Gustavo Rodri'guez read the speeches and the music was recorded by ▓ªª
ªª▓ Serenata Guayanesa with Herna'n Gamboa (his first recordings as a solo artist) and the late ▓ªª
ªª▓ internationally renowned artist Jesu's Soto, for the first and only time recorded singing ▓ªª
ªª▓ and playing the guitar. After that Herna'n Gamboa went on to pursue a solo career, while the ▓ªª
ªª▓ pediatrician, singer and cuatrista caraquen~o Miguel A'ngel Bosch joined the group. With ▓ªª
ªª▓ Bosch, the group recorded in 1984 a second album of music for children ("Cantemos con los ▓ªª
ªª▓ nin~os, volumen 2") less successful than the first. However, the group recorded a second ▓ªª
ªª▓ navideno LP entitled "Viene la parranda", with other musicians, for example a guest ▓ªª
ªª▓ appearance by the cuatro and violin player Gualberto Ibarreto. Two years later, for their ▓ªª
ªª▓ fifteenth anniversary, the group brought out an album "Caribe Abajo" of Latin American ▓ªª
ªª▓ music, some composed specially, some already known. In this album the group was supported by ▓ªª
ªª▓ the musicians Rafael, Kenny and Carlos Arrieta (on the caja, guacharaca and accordion, ▓ªª
ªª▓ respectively) for a performance of the number in vallenato style "Mis Peroles" (composed by ▓ªª
ªª▓ Iva'n Pe'rez Rossi), and their first videoclip was recorded in a humorous style. In 1991, ▓ªª
ªª▓ the group recorded their first CD entitled "Si la tierra, tierra fuera", promoted by a ▓ªª
ªª▓ further video. They had a new hit from this album with the interpretation of the pasodoble ▓ªª
ªª▓ "Caracas Mi Ciudad" with the trumpeter Jorge Montenegro and the drummer Antonio Cestari. ▓ªª
ªª▓ Their stay with the Sonogra'fica label was ended with their first live album, recorded at a ▓ªª
ªª▓ concert at the Teresa Carren~o Theatre, celebrating their 25th anniversary. This double ▓ªª
ªª▓ album entitled "Una Amistad de 25 An~os" (A 25 Year Friendship) had contributions by well ▓ªª
ªª▓ known Venezuelan artists such as Mari'a Teresa Chaci'n, Cheo Hurtado, Simo'n Di'az, ▓ªª
ªª▓ Gualberto Ibarreto, Vidal Colmenares, Ismael Querales, and the gaita zuliana singers Ricardo ▓ªª
ªª▓ Cepeda and Abdenago "Neguito" Borjas. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ After this, Serenata Guayanesa began to produce their own recordings, reissuing their ▓ªª
ªª▓ previous albums with Sonogra'fica CD format, including numbers recorded in past times with ▓ªª
ªª▓ new compositions. in 2003 the CD "Cantemos Con Los Nin~os" (LetÆs Sing with the Children) ▓ªª
ªª▓ presents a revised edition of their first album of Venezuelan music for children, in 2005 ▓ªª
ªª▓ Serenata Guayanesa made the album El Ferrocarril, with new compositions and new songs. ▓ªª

ªª▓ The Ensamble Gurrufio is a celebrated quartet dedicated to the research, arrangement and ▓ªª
ªª▓ reinterpretation of Venezuelan instrumental music. Their approach has to do with a new, ▓ªª
ªª▓ classically-schooled, educated style, but allowing for improvisation as a fundamental ▓ªª
ªª▓ element, leaving ample room for the spontaneous, the unexpected, the ability to extract the ▓ªª
ªª▓ most from the virtuosity of each one of its members, resulting in unique and hardly ▓ªª
ªª▓ repeatable performances. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ The Ensamble Gurrufio was founded on 1984 by three young musicians, Luis Julio Toro ▓ªª
ªª▓ (flute), Cristo'bal Soto (mandolin), and Cheo Hurtado (cuatro). David Pen~a (bass) completed ▓ªª
ªª▓ the quartet in 1989. All of the four are academy musicians and teachers with considerable ▓ªª
ªª▓ background as soloists and performers. The group immediately became well-known for their ▓ªª
ªª▓ lively persona, instrumental virtuosity, and sense of humor. Their mood can vary from ▓ªª
ªª▓ rigorous and solemn, up to festive and hilarious, a quality greatly enjoyed by the public ▓ªª
ªª▓ when they perform live. A fifth member, Juan Ernesto Laya (maracas ) joined the ensemble ▓ªª
ªª▓ since 1998, when Cristo'bal Soto moved to a permanent residence in France. The group has ▓ªª
ªª▓ occasionally incorporated additional members, such as Jaime Marti'nez (oboe) and Moise's ▓ªª
ªª▓ Torrealba (bandola). The emsemnle has performed in collaboration with other celebrated ▓ªª
ªª▓ Venezuelan groups, such as Serenata Guayanesa, the Camerata Criolla, and the Great Marshal ▓ªª
ªª▓ of Ayacucho Symphony orchestra. Similarly, they have recorded together with acclaimed ▓ªª
ªª▓ foreign musicians like Bela Fleck, among others. The reason why this ensemble is regarded as ▓ªª
ªª▓ among the most important of the genre lies not only in their virtuosity, but also in their ▓ªª
ªª▓ contemporary sense, expressed through the urban traditional genre of Venezuelan music. ▓ªª
ªª▓ Gurrufio conserves the romanticism, the melancholy and the "cool" sense of the Venezuelan ▓ªª
ªª▓ instrumental tradition, and at the same time adopts present-day harmony and rhythm. ▓ªª
ªª▓ Improvisation is exploited to the maximum, always resulting in exceptionally pleasant ▓ªª
ªª▓ renditions. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ Gurrufio's repertoire, comprised of works of yesterday and today, and often including their ▓ªª
ªª▓ own original compositions, is enriched by the individual musical sense of each member. Their ▓ªª
ªª▓ live performances and recordings are characterized by the addition of long-forgotten pieces, ▓ªª
ªª▓ rescued through research and interaction with other scholars experienced in Venezuelan ▓ªª
ªª▓ music. ▓ªª
ªª▓ ▓ªª
ªª▓ In their works, sparkling, romantic, affectionate, lyric, and virtuoso passages flow and ▓ªª
ªª▓ coexist effortlessly. Gurrufio resists to be placed in a category. Their graceful and ▓ªª
ªª▓ refreshing style does not truly belong to folklore, or to classical music, or to jazz, or to ▓ªª
ªª▓ new age. What they offer is a versatile, multi-faced contemporary instrumental music, deeply ▓ªª
ªª▓ rooted in the Venezuelan tradition. To be able to watch them performing live is a unique and ▓ªª
ªª▓ most enjoyable experience. ▓ªª
