Giacinto Scelsi refused to write down his works because, to
his way of thinking, influenced as it was by far-eastern
mysticism and philosophy, only the spontaneous primeval
impulse seemed important and not some laborious elaboration.
For decades Scelsi was ridiculed as a dilettante and his
quiet, meditative compositions, which are often deliberately
'mono-tonous' yet exert a magical fasci-nation, began to
receive steadily increasing international acclaim only after
his death. They have no parallel in the history of music and
for the conductor Hans Zender they are archaic emanations of a
"consciousness of unity", an "oceanic" sensation of
overwhelming power and sensually vibrant inner tension.
