ÛÛ All the conductors who have worked with the Flemish Radio ÛÛ
ÛÛ Choir, or VRK, have no hesitation in ranking it along side ÛÛ
ÛÛ the other two great European chamber choirs, Accentus and ÛÛ
ÛÛ the RIAS Kammerchor. Its technical confidence, expressive ÛÛ
ÛÛ capacity and profound knowledge of the repertoires, as well ÛÛ
ÛÛ as its enormous vision and originality in putting together ÛÛ
ÛÛ its programs, are the key factors that have led to the ÛÛ
ÛÛ inclusion of this elite group in Glossa's selection of ÛÛ
ÛÛ artists. Apart from the regular work with its Belgian ÛÛ
ÛÛ conductor Johan Duijck, there are already plans for concerts ÛÛ
ÛÛ and recordings with maestros such as Paul Hillier and Hervé ÛÛ
ÛÛ Niquet, in what will be, indeed already is, a new and ÛÛ
ÛÛ fascinating line for our label. Composed during the Second ÛÛ
ÛÛ World War (most of it at a Budapest monastery) and completed ÛÛ
ÛÛ in 1944, Missa Brevis was first performed in 1945, just ÛÛ
ÛÛ after the end of the war, at the Budapest Opera House (where ÛÛ
ÛÛ Kodály and his wife had been forced to seek refuge during ÛÛ
ÛÛ the final days of the conflict). In fact, it was actually ÛÛ
ÛÛ performed in the dressing rooms, these apparently being the ÛÛ
ÛÛ only part of the building that had not been damaged by the ÛÛ
ÛÛ constant air raids on the city. It is one of his most ÛÛ
ÛÛ notable choral pieces with accompaniment and subliminally ÛÛ
ÛÛ conveys the suffering and uncertainty of that endless time ÛÛ
ÛÛ during which Kodály risked his own life on more than one ÛÛ
ÛÛ occasion. While all of this certainly helps to explain its ÛÛ
ÛÛ powerful emotional and intensely dramatic qualities, more ÛÛ
ÛÛ than anything else Missa Brevis is a hymn to hope, a musical ÛÛ
ÛÛ poem of extraordinary transparency written in praise not ÛÛ
ÛÛ only of the divinity that governs the destiny of humanity ÛÛ
ÛÛ and nations but also, rooted as ever in the popular, of ÛÛ
ÛÛ religious feeling, as manifested in believers for comfort ÛÛ
ÛÛ and strength in the most difficult of circumstances. Let us ÛÛ
ÛÛ end by remembering the following words pronounced by Kodály: ÛÛ
ÛÛ 'Our age of mechanization leads along a road ending with man ÛÛ
ÛÛ himself a machine: only the spirit of singing can save us ÛÛ
ÛÛ from this fate.' With its vigorous lyricism, its vibrant ÛÛ
ÛÛ intonation, but also its alternation between restraint and ÛÛ
ÛÛ jubilation, the Missa Brevis is a formidable exercise in ÛÛ
ÛÛ sonorous refinement, an amalgam of singularly rich and ÛÛ
ÛÛ sensitive musical impressions, a source of constant ÛÛ
ÛÛ enjoyment for any listener who demands of a composition not ÛÛ
ÛÛ so much the somewhat banal power of relaxation but rather ÛÛ
ÛÛ the momentary suspension of what one philosopher has called ÛÛ
ÛÛ the 'world's prose', meaning, the general lines that ÛÛ
ÛÛ generally govern the material world, 'mechanization', ÛÛ
ÛÛ stripped of spirituality. ÛÛ
