** GOSSIP **
Originally from Searcy, AR, this punk trio moved to
Olympia, WA, joining the roster of the indie rock label K
Records. Guitarist Nathan (aka Brace Paine), drummer
Kathy, and singer Beth proclaimed, "We started a band
'cause we were bored. Our mission is to make you dance,
and if you're not gonna dance, just stay at home and
listen to the oldies station." K released a self-titled 7"
in 1999, and their full-length debut, That's Not What I
Heard, was distributed by Kill Rock Stars in late 2000.
The Gossip were highly visible due to their exposure in
magazines like Out and The Advocate, where they became
icons in the gay and lesbian indie rock community. After
touring with the White Stripes and Sleater-Kinney, they
went back to the studio to record the follow-up, 2002's
Arkansas Heat. They returned the following year with
Movement, while Nathan also performed with Die Monitr
Batss. New drummer Hannah Billie joined the Gossip before
they recorded 2005's Standing in the Way of Control, which
incorporated elements of dance-punk into their raw, urgent
sound. GSSP RMX, which further emphasized their more
danceable direction, was released in 2006. The concert
album Live in Liverpool arrived in the U.K. in late 2007
and was then issued in the U.S. by the band's new label,
the Sony imprint Red Ink, in spring 2008. Rework-It, a
remix compilation, followed that summer.
** THE BLAKES **
Taking inspiration from early-'60s Brit rock and the
D.I.Y. spirit of punk, the Blakes are comprised of Garnet
Keim (vocals, guitar), Snow Keim, and Bob Husak (drummer).
The power trio took root in 2001, when the Maine-born Keim
siblings (who had been busking across the country since
the late '90s, working odd jobs and writing music) met
Husak at a Seattle coffeehouse. The Keims were impressed
with Husak's percussion, likening its energy to that of
the Who's Keith Moon, and the three relocated to Los
Angeles to write material for their newly minted band.
After two years, the Blakes left the coast on a self-
booked tour, playing unpaid shows and holding impromptu
practices at truck stops. Upon returning home to Seattle,
they issued the self-released Little Whispers EP in 2005,
effectively gaining the attention of local radio station
KEXP. The station's influential DJs -- most notably
programming director John Richards -- proved to be early
champions of the Blakes, giving them extensive airplay and
broadcasting an in-studio performance as well. The Blakes
responded by issuing a second EP the following year --
this one self-titled and self-released -- and were
subsequently signed by local label Light in the Attic.
2007 saw the release of the Streets EP; later that year,
the Blakes reissued their self-titled EP as an official
full-length album, complete with remastered sound and
additional tracks.
** THE KILLS **
The bluesy punk duo the Kills consists of
vocalist/guitarist VV, aka Alison Mosshart, formerly of
the Florida punk band Discount, and
drummer/guitarist/vocalist Hotel, aka Jamie Hince. After
Discount ended in 2000, VV began exchanging tapes with the
London-based Hotel through the mail, but both of them felt
hindered by this method, so VV crossed the Atlantic so the
duo could write faster. In spring of 2001, they issued a
self-released demo that showcased their gritty, sexy sound
and earned favorable reviews from such quarters as TapeOp
Magazine. They also contributed a song, "Restaurant
Blouse," to 5 Rue Christine's If the Twenty-First Century
Did Not Exist It Would Be Necessary to Invent It
compilation early in 2002, before their debut EP, Black
Rooster, arrived that summer on Dim Mak. Along with gigs
at the London and Glasgow LadyFests and supporting Le
Tigre, the Kills also toured the U.S. for eight weeks
before returning to London to finish their first full-
length album, Keep on Your Mean Side, which was released
by Rough Trade in spring 2003. Their second album, No Wow,
arrived in 2005 and was an even dirtier, leaner collection
of songs. The Kills retooled their sound for 2008's
Midnight Boom, mixing in more electronic beats and pop
hooks.s
** PETE & THE PIRATES **
Hailing from Reading, England, Pete and the Pirates make
frenetic and thoughtful indie rock with a bent toward
early-'80s post-punk. Featuring the talents of vocalist
Tommy Sanders, bassist/vocalist Peter Cattermoul,
guitarist David Thorpe, guitarist/vocalist Peter Hefferan,
and drummer Jonny Sanders, Pete and the Pirates released
their debut album, Little Death, in 2008.
