Release Notes:
--------
Apparently this latest album from Antony Harding (and his pals in Epic45) is
themed around the architecture and design of the post-war era, which presumably
is represented somewhere within the mumbled and beautifully echo-sodden lyrics
that crop up occasionally. Otherwise the only concrete link to this sort of
imagery comes via the accompanying booklet, filled with photographs of
sepia-tinted housing estates and tenement blocks. In instrumental terms, the
July Skies sound owes much to the never more popular sound of 4AD past, Durutti
Column and less pop-oriented ambient music. In fact, it's when the guitars and
vocals disappear that you start to glimpse something of what Harding might be
striving for on this album. The deep-set, reverberant pianos of 'Broadcasts For
Autumn Term' and 'Waiting For The Test Card' signpost a sense of absence or
longing. All this finally connects more concretely to the past and its emotional
vapour trails when the voice of an elderly woman reads out a poem about lost
love over The Weather Clock's very final track, which is not without resonance.
Beautiful stuff - Highly Recommended.
