Release Notes:
Born in 1981, German pianist Benjamin Schaefer received a solid
classical education before turning to jazz in 1998. Three years
later, he started studying jazz piano, music teaching and
composition at Cologne Music University. Schaefer attended lessons
and workshops by piano players as diverse as John Taylor, Chick
Corea, Jacques Loussier and Hans Lu"demann. In 2004 he became a
member of the German Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO), led
by big band legend Peter Herbolzheimer, as well as the NRW
Landesjazzorchester, the Northern Rhine region's official jazz
orchestra.
Also in 2004, just 23 years old, Benjamin Schaefer delivered a
sensational album with his own trio. "Shapes And Colours" was
considered "a perfect career start" (West German Radio) and "an
amazingly mature debut" (Jazz thing magazine). The trio's live
performances were hailed a document of "very creative chamber
musical jazz of great maturity" (Jazz Zeitung), and soon Schaefer
turned into "the shooting star of German jazz" (Wiesbadener
Kurier).
International success was to follow: At the 2007 contest "Tremplin
Jazz d'Avignon" in Southern France the pianist received the prize
for the best composition, his trio being the live audience's
favorite ensemble (prix du public).
Now the Benjamin Schaefer Trio confirms its status among today's
piano trios with the new album "Roots And Wings". Harmonically and
rhythmically refined, the trio's music is distinguished by great
pianistical talent, love for melodies, a young group's astonishing
unity, tasteful references to European roots and charming original
compositions. Again Schaefer is evenly matched by his partners,
much-in-demand bass player Robert Landfermann (who already
performed on four continents) and drummer Marcus Rieck, a former
student of Keith Copeland and experienced in many tv and radio
productions. Listening to this fresh, swinging and moving group
effort you clearly understand the recent vote of Avignon's
audience.
