Some words about him :
b. Clifford Price, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. A
distinctive visual as well as aural presence, graffiti
artist, hardcore and jungle innovator Goldie is
distinguished by the gold-inlaid front teeth from which many
assume he takes his name. In fact, Goldie is an abbreviation
of "Goldilocks", a nickname he earned from his
gold-dreadlocked hip-hop days. Though he jealously guards
his true identity, his origins can be fixed in
Wolverhampton, England, though he spends much of his time at
clubs in London. In his youth he travelled to Miami and New
York but returned to subsidise his musical activities as a
(somewhat unsuccessful) mugger. Possibly his most famous
graffiti illustration was his "Change The World' mural at
Queens Park Rangers" Loftus Road football ground in London.
Later his paintings, which had once been the main source of
his criminal record, were sold for over ·3,000 each. His
early musical experiences were most notably conducted as
part of the Metalheads collective (later Metalheadz) on
hardcore imprint Reinforced Records. He had previously
recorded a white label EP under the name Ajaz Project and
then "Killer Muffin" as a solo artist.
The Metalheads' Angel EP was a major breakthrough for
"intelligent hardcore", and when offshoots of hardcore (an
extreme hybrid of techno) mixed with reggae and evolved into
jungle in 1993/4, Goldie found himself at the centre of the
new movement. However, he had little time for General Levy,
and other artists he saw as "bandwagon jumpers". His own
"Inner City Life' single maximised the possibilities of the
drum 'n' bass sound of jungle, using them as a framework for
melodious vocals and other musical innovations. Similarly,
the sounds contained on Timeless, the first jungle album
released on a major label and to find mainstream approval,
eschewed any notion of observing dance music convention. He
admitted to influences as diverse as the Stranglers (notably
Jean Jacques Burnel's bass), 10cc and hip-hop behind this
multi-layered recording. His compatriots in the project were
Moving Shadow Records' boss Rob Playford, jungle artist
Dillinja, keyboard player Justina Curtis, singers Diane
Charlemagne and Lorna Harris, plus jazz musicians Cleveland
Watkiss and Steve Williamson. This array of talent ensured a
multi-dimensional sound, underpinned by breakbeats and
rolling cycles of rhythm. The press had finally found a
figurehead for the previously anonymous jungle movement, a
role Goldie subsequently lived up to in sometimes reckless
style. The uneven Saturnz Return was, for all its failings,
jungle's most ambitious album to date, and boasted guest
appearances from David Bowie, KRS-One, Noel Gallagher,
Dillinja, Charlemagne and Virus Records" co-owner Optical
(Matt Quinn). The DJ now balances club work with a
burgeoning acting career, which has included appearances in
The World Is Not Enough, Snatch and the UK soap opera,
EastEnders.
