the 'real jazz' revolution continues at a pace with credible,
fashionable labels and musicians leading the cause. japanese jazz
quartet, sleepwalker, drop their eponymous dΘbut lp via the
cutting-edge especial imprint, the label run by the kyoto jazz
massive's yoshihiro okino. sleepwalker themselves are led by
masato nakamura, an accomplished saxophonist who plays very much
in the realm of spiritual jazz. combined with the prolific hajime
yoshizawa, who recently appeared on both the jazzanova and big
bang lps, nobuyuki fuji, erstwhile drummer with ted curson, and
tomokazu sugimoto, who drops the heaviest of bass sounds, it
becomes clear why this album is set to become one of the proper
jazz releases of the year. check the saunders-inspired
'ai-no-kawa' or the sweeping 'time voyage', for example, for some
impressive freestyle musicianship. there are some more
conventional club sounds in there too, most notably the driving
groove of 'resurrection'. an album for pure jazz and beat heads
alike, plus you get swifty's top-notch artwork thrown into the
bargain.
