SLCD 151
Madala Kunene is a highly influential artist in the South African Maskhanda
tradition, with over 55 years of experience, and touring worldwide. He is unique
in sound, having revived the 'Madalaine' style of guitar playing: combining
blues & soul with African folk, developing the trance-like quality of his
particular approach.
His is Zulu folk singing which draws influence from traditional folklore and
culture with wit and clarity û he relates traditional Zulu folk tales we would
otherwise forget.
Track ôKonÆko Manö, featured in this album, has been on LINK TV and National
Geography channel for years, and still is.
BBC show called ôLong Way Downö uses track ôZimpi Zombangoö as a theme tune û
also in this album.
Work and collaborations with Jose Neto, Flora Purim, and Swiss guitarist Max
Lasser, amongst a host of South African musical ôbig namesö.
As Nelson Mandela put it when seeing Madala performing for the third time in a
space of three months in Durban, South Africa: "It's you again! I wish you could
play for me everywhere I go...ö
