Formerly of short-lived North-East folkies Tarras comes Jon
Redfern with his album µWhat Else But Love?╞ Redfern has
supported Richard Thompson, Kate Walsh, Jackie Leven, Joan As
Police Woman and Rachel Unthank so he would seem to be in good
company. Although his songs, while beautifully composed with
luscious arrangements and vocals in the pastoral style of Nick
Drake, make you just want to reach for a Nick Drake album.
µSpark In The Sky,╞ begins the album in understated fashion
with cavernous vocals. On the piano ballad µFuture Lies,╞ he
picks up an octave µI╞ve no opinion, there╞s no solution,╞ he
notifies us. The soulful µTroubadour╞ proffers the line µout
there is a one way street, should have stayed in Wales.╞ The
pretty ditty µForever Bound,╞ talks of a dry dusty vein and
yearning rain, all very bleak, reflective and yet clich┌d.
Redfern and his band produce a mishmash of contemporary folk,
jazz and chill out. All the lovely guitar lines and
instrumental finger-picking can╞t make up for the fact that
the lyrics just don't speak to you. The James Blunt of Folk
perhaps, this album could serve as the innocuous background to
a Sunday afternoon reading the papers.
