▒▓██▓ If This Culture of Background Noise criticises the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ tendency of music to be a soundtrack to daily life, ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ rather than appreciated in itself, perhaps all is not ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ lost. The post-rock album may be melancholy, and as ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ is expected, Because Of Ghosts continually err on the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ eerie side of darkness. But the record demands ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ attention, with songs that surprisingly speak ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ volumes, despite being instrumental. Because Of ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Ghosts may be lamenting a culture of distraction, but ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ if nothing else this album provides a glimmer of ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ hope, with their final statement 'Dreaming is ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Essential.' In fact, the majority of album tracks ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ emerge with whispers of loneliness, but conclude on ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ an uplifting note. Drummer Jacob Pearce couldn't be ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ described as tentative, but he plays with finesse to ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ allow the musicality of the remaining members to ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ shine. Despite the technical precision of Reuben and ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Domenic Stanton, the eight tracks flow naturally, and ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ lack the contrived sound of an overly produced ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ record. Such orchestral brilliance follows the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ footsteps of producer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire) ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ and will continue to invite comparisons to Dirty ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ Three. The variation in track lengths between two and ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ nine minutes also suggest that Because of Ghosts ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ recorded a stream of consciousness, as opposed to a ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ collection of singles. The opening strings in ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ 'Canadia' could too easily accompany a body strewn ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ battlefield in an epic movie, and it even has the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ final chords of redemption which remind that the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ battle was well fought. Similarly, the frantic energy ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ in 'The Battle of Mount Royal' casts confused images, ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ whilst reflecting the Montreal recording studio where ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ this album was inspired. Although each track paints a ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ poignant scene, Because of Ghosts need not fear the ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ background noise. They could never write accompanying ░█▓▒
▒▓██▓ music - their notes speak far louder than words. ░█▓▒
