Release Notes:
New limited edition live CD from the Religious
Knives quartet of Mike and Maya Bernstein (Double
Leopards), Nate Nelson (Mouthus) and Todd Cavallo.
If you've ever nursed the idea that beneath alla
the F/X and dubbed-delay of the past few Religious
Knives sides there lurks a garage band as
monomanically stupe as The Seeds then this is the
one to jam between all-night flips of Music Machine
and Sir Douglas Quintet sides (a regular happening
round our gaff every Friday night). Recorded
08/15/07 at Big Jar Books in Philadelphia, the
sound here is much more stripped down and classically
snot-nosed than the previous more gloopily psychedelic
excursions. The organ sounds like what yr average
teenage no-counts were sure sounded *exactly* the
same as Ray Manzarek back in 1967 and the guitars
sound like guitars while the vocals have less than
a fraction of the wobble that the studio shots coat
em in. And it's all the better for it. This pretty
much confirms the much-repeated rumours that live
in-person Religious Knives are nothing but a great
fucking rock band. And that's high fucking praise.
The version of "The Sun" that opens this - always
their most obviously Doors obsessed track - sounds
like Sky Saxon's slo-mo re-think of "Moonlight Drive"
and pretty much proves that there is no one who can
so completely nuance a straight ahead motorik beat
like Nate Nelson. And before you can even say
Question Mark and The Mysterians they're head-first
into a beautifully drugged take on "96 Tears" that
extends into that classic post-Velvets nowhere zone
ala Opal et al, even evoking the kind of avant-garage
electricity of early Pere Ubu and the repeat-riff
narcosis of Boston doofs like Cul de Sac and The Girls.
It's a great rock and roll record and it makes me
very fucking happy to say so. Edition of 600 copies
in the usual full-colour fold-around sleeves. Highly
recommended.
