The Dope On Plastic series is compiled by John Stapleton AKA Dr
Jam. John has been spinning quality Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz in clubs
in the south west for over 5 years, launching the legendary Cooker
night in Bristol and landing the coveted DJ residency at
Glastonbury and Womad festivals. John also writes for MixMag Update
as their Funky Hip Hop expert.
Dope On Plastic features 12 tracks from some of the UK's most
popular leftfield labels including Sabres of Paradise, Cloak &
Dagger, Dorado and Cup Of Tea. None of these tunes have been
available on any compilation albums and most have not been
available on CD before. The dozen featured tracks are all blunted
boom cuts from the underground jazz and trip hop scene.
On a mission to locate all things lowdown, dirty, heavily funked,
tripped out and blunted up 'DOP' starts off with all guns blazing -
kicking in with the sprawling sampledelia of Bootman's (aka Tod
Terry's) 'To The Hip' before skidding hellishly into the
pharmaceutical soundclash of The Chemical Brothers' revamping
Primal Scream's 'Jailbird'. Quite an entrance, and the rest of the
show's pretty unmissable too.
The Woodshed unleash a skipping soundtrack to late night Rizla
searches. The Disciples' steer sublime reggae to the verge of
electronic mind mash, Dillinja's Massive storm in with thymes and
rhythms that could take your eye out and Bristol's Crustation
devide the moody chugger to top all moody chuggers. More stoned
than a Grateful Dead fanclub meeting, more out-there than a weekend
