Release Notes:
The Datsuns are back at last and although New Zealand has,
perhaps surprisingly, very rarely produced acts with the
ability to make it in Europe as well as in the UK they remain
one of the countries finest musical exports. Having built a
reputation of high paced and perfectly chaotic live
performances their albums also hold their own within their
genre on every occasion. The release of new album æHeadstuntsÆ
looks set to regain the group vast approval from avid
followers and hopefully bring to peopleÆs attention a band of
genuine talent and above all raw passion for the cause. For a
band once heralded by the late John Peel and described by the
music press as ôthe future of rock musicö this new release
will once again showcase the early promise that was realised
through the groups self titled debut.
Opener æHuman ErrorÆ comes at you fast and is a brilliant
example of first track enthusiasm and sets the tempo just
right for the rest of the album. Its screaming guitar intro
quickly transforms into the consistent pounding of drums and a
sing along chorus that will no doubt become a live favourite
for anyone lucky enough to catch the band on tour this year.
æHey! Paranoid PeopleÆ has the synthesised hook to keep you
happy enough but Dolf De BorstÆs vocals are again as strong as
they ever have been. Not afraid to keep anything back they
remain as good as ever, unpolished, honest and brilliant. In
their similarities to Australian neighbours The Vines both
bands take the grunge characteristics of early Nirvana and
twist them to suit a more popular audience with choruses ready
to be sung back to the band by an audience who will be more
than eager to oblige. Stand out track on the album comes
courtesy of æYour BonesÆ as its intricate guitar lines sync
with the distortion laden bass, a feature that remains both
consistent and thoroughly pleasing throughout this album.
Very few artists around can command this sort of stead-fast
attention from an album upon first listen and with a growing
reputation worldwide this sort of talent is few and far
between. æEye Of The NeedleÆ is a slow burner but a notch down
in tempo soon recedes to the bands usual style as guitar solos
come to as a mid-eighth of Muse proportions unfolds. Latter
tracks remain true to form as they slot nicely into an album
as consistent in form and style as it is in quality.
æHeadstuntsÆ is a delight from start to finish, even the eight
minute long æSomebody BetterÆ stays the course as Sonic Youth
influences come to the forefront for a band as versatile to
experimentation as they are to straight forward punk. The
Datsuns are back, and not a moment too soon.
