Does anyone really want to know where the maker of these songs
lives (Birmingham, Alabama), what he does all day (is a civil
rights lawyer), what his favorite synthesizer is (how could you
possibly choose?), his favorite food (sushi) or his favorite record
("The Man Machine")? Could anyone possibly care that he grew up in
New York and Washington, D.C., studied guitar, cello, and classical
composition, then later philosophy and the history of science in
college? Does anyone really want to know that he writes and records
his music on old analog synthesizers and drum machines?
Kell Simon (aka Phasmid) has been collecting electronic
instruments and recording electronic music since he was in
elementary school, but only recently had he considered the
possibility of releasing his recordings. In the fall of 2001, Simon
sent out demos of some of his recordings to labels specializing in
electronic music, and this led to the establishment of a
relationship with the Skylab Operations label based out of Vienna,
Austria.
"Her Friend The Blue Star" is Phasmid's debut full length
featuring remixes of the complete album from around the world. Disc
1 features 11 songs of electro-influenced melodics, complete with
gentle vocoded voices (courtesy of The Uberkids), airy rhythms, and
Kraftwerk-inspired melodies. Disc 2 features remixes from a
collection of our favourite artists from around the world, as well
as a surprise or two. Also, the return of the extremely talented
Klon Design, designing the wonderful ice-world where her friend the
